Pleased to see DK's Kelly Eleved's piece on the front page today, but things are happening so fast on this story that it's already outdated. Here's what's come out in the past 24 hours:
CNN found an army pilot named Rich Krell who partially backed up Williams story, claiming he was the copter pilot, and it was shot at by guns and rifles, if not an RPG. Still, it gave the celebrity some breathing room.
Immediately, the Washington Post, Politico and other publications began beating the drum on Williams' behalf, using words like "confusing," "fog" and "uncertainty" to create reasonable doubt about what really happened, and perhaps salvage Williams reputation and job.
But very quickly Stars & Stripes, which originally broke the Williams story, and The New York Times took a closer look at Krell's allegations and by mid-morning today, Krell was already backpedaling and CNN had to write a mea culpa.
Meanwhile, Williams dramatic accounts of his experiences during Hurricane Katrina -- seeing a body float by his hotel, catching dysentery, watching a guy commit suicide at the Louisiana Dome -- are also coming under fire.
The guy seemed likable, but you could tell he loved being a celebrity much more than a journalist -- lots of guest appearances on NBC series, got his daughter a TV gig, etc. His career should be over, but NBC hasn't even commented yet, hoping to ride this out. But the vultures are circling. As they should be.
