France's foreign minister publicly stated that Iran's nuclear program is a cover for the creation of a nuclear weapon. Iran has accused France of needlessly increasing tension. See New York Times article here.
This news is troubling. First, no one wants Iran to have nuclear weapons. Second, because France has made the accusation it carries a lot more credibility, leading to Three: how will the Bush Administration use this accusation.
The Administration has been beating the drums for war with Iran for some time. As has been diaried and discussed here and elsewhere, the administration apparently has plans for a bombing campaign. France's statement, because of their vocal opposition to the Iraq war, provides the fig leaf needed to cut off diplomacy and act in a unilateral military fashion.
