I have a family situation which has me in my quilting room every day. My adult disabled daughter is in the family room, on her computer, and I’m quilting! It gives us the space to simply be.
I’m always pondering what am I going to do with my quilts, finished and unfinished? Last year, I donated 14 quilts to the Caldor Fire victims Facebook group.
Another Caldor fire victim who chose one of my wild and crazy quilts! Made me vary happy.
I donate at least two quilts every year to Saving Gracie, a local organization run by a friend of mine, that helps folks (in our area) with financial help to save their pet. She works directly with the veterinarians. This year she’s going to do what she can to show that veterinarians are essential workers too! Many are committing suicide and quiting. The pandemic has made it very hard on them too, yet no one is aware.
She usually auctions the quilts. This year she’ll have them as prizes for her “Bingo de Mayo” dinner fundraiser. She chose this one because it’s BIG and fits the theme.
This is the second one she chose. The woman who was with her said she really wants to win this one!
In the past I’ve donated quilts for chemo patients, and the year of the Santa Rosa and Paradise fires, I donated twenty five. This year I put over 30 quilts up for sale on Etsy, with more to come (Quilts Unique by Laura.) Some custom quilted, some pantographs.
I had a goal to quilt up at least 30 of my own last year. Did it!!! Here’s the last one of ‘21.
I still have over sixty more of my own to quilt up. All sitting in bins with backing fabric and binding. Plus…..making more while the computer driven machine quilts customer quilts. Get ‘em done this year? Who knows. My plan now (we all know how that works) is to quilt the quilts right after I make them, rather than put them into bins for future quilting. Here’s the first one, cut, pieced, quilted and bound, all in 2022!
To say quilting has been my life, since 2006, is an understament. But….it has been my sanity and therapy, espeically during 45’s reign, and being locked in during the pandemic. Very grateful.
My family members were given quilts in the past. I still haven’t seen the quilt I gave my son/DIL anywhere when we visit. The baby quilts have been put away, after being used by the grandkids, as an heirloom for them when they get older (NICE!).
A quilt I made that my daughter chose. Still in the cedar chest. I haven’t made any more quilts for my family because they don’t use them.
I have a few more I’m keeping in a cedar chest for me and I’ve got three quilts hanging up in the house. One on the wall behind my bed.
Broken Heart hangs in the living room. I finished piecing it when my first dog passed. I put it away for five years. Thought of my first furry girl and it was too hard. Finally quilted it and entered it into the local May Fair in Dixon CA years ago. It won 1st Place in the size category.
I will donate more quilts this year. Hopefully not for a whole city that is burned down in California! I will put more up on Etsy later in the year, when I have more finally finished. I also made another plan — quilt at least one of my own every week. We’ll see how that goes.
I’ll keep on piecing and quilting and working on keeping sane during 2022.
Has your family maxed out on your quilt gifts to them? Do you also donate? Do you make quilts for specific reason? Do you just make what you want for yourself? Please post pictures in your comments.
