Is this the Reichstag or the US House?

by Benito

Before the Nazi seizure of power in Germany a key element of the fascist strategy for seizing control of the state was to have its elected members disrupt the legislature. The goal, of course, was to discredit the procedural aspects of constitutional, democratic government and reduce the legislature to a farce so as to undermine the legitimacy of the system altogether. By disrupting the workings of the legislature, the Nazis flaunted their contempt of liberal democracy that allowed them their place in government and helped to paralyze the government's response to the economic crisis caused by the Great Depression.

Vitter's 'Macaca' Moment?

by Benito

Wow. Just wow. Mike Stark has done it again.

As our friend Mike reports, Louisiana Senator David Vitter hasn't yet commented on the infamous Justice of the Peace who refused to give that interracial couple a marriage license.

Greetings folks - perhaps some of you have seen the rather vicious anti-Health Care ads being run on TV (I saw it on MSNBC of all places) by the seemingly innocuous group the US Citizens Association. The particular ad I saw was the one at the bottom of the page titled "Socialized Medicine." Amusingly, it has the Soviet National anthem playing as the background music of the ad.

For those who have been watching the ongoing Peak Oil story play out - there were rumors last year at The Oil Drum that the IEA was coming out with a bombshell announcement in regards to long-term oil supplies in November, but such an announcement was allegedly suppressed for reasons unknown.

Gog and Magog Story Confirmed by Chirac

by Benito

Well folks, here's something a little terrifying to go with your morning cup of coffee.

Remember back in 2003 when it came out from French sources that President Bush, while having dinner with then French president Jacques Chirac mentioned Bible prohpecy - specifically 'Gog and Magog' - as reasons for invading Iraq?

Well, apparently the story is true... and has been confirmed by Chirac himself.

I haven't seen this in the diaries, so here's the scoop.

Haaretz, a major Israeli paper, has gotten hold of a secret database of illegal settlements amassed by the Israeli government that reveals widespread Israeli government complicity in the illegal settlement of Palestinian land.

From Haaretz:

Just four years ago, the defense establishment decided to carry out a seemingly elementary task: establish a comprehensive database on the settlements. Brigadier General (res.) Baruch Spiegel, aide to then defense minister Shaul Mofaz, was put in charge of the project. For over two years, Spiegel and his staff, who all signed a special confidentiality agreement, went about systematically collecting data, primarily from the Civil Administration.
