The full DC Appeals court is going to rehear the Halbig subsidies case where a smaller panel ruled that federal exchanges could not award subsidies.  If the full court overrules, it likely will not go to the Supreme Court.

Get your fake conscience off my lawn

Here's an interesting link responding to Hobby Lobby's conscience exemption claim to the ACA. http://flowerhorne.com/...

Some early criticisms on the ACA, came from fast food chains. This article gives different views which, happily, range from undecided to quite happy with ACA.

Please send it out to the next person who claims ACA will hurt businesses.

Posting this article here is pretty much like preaching to the choir.
So do me a favor. Pass this on to your conservative friends/family (or post it to a conservative site ;) )

In Germany, the average auto worker makes twice as much as in the US (plus better state benefits), the companies make more cars and are quite profitable. And they have unions. When those companies open plants in the US, those conditions go away. It seems the governmental and union conditions in Germany lead to a more prosperous and more profitable situation., according to conservatives, this is not supposed to happen, but it does. Government regs and unions work together to make things better for business.

Debt Limit explained

by Chrisfs

Debt Limit Explained
This is a great cartoon explanation of the debt limit.  And it's short, under 3 minutes
Some time, the debt limit will need to be raised again and there will be another fight.
It would be good to understand it as well as possible, so you can respond to right wingers who claim about too much government spending, except when it's in the form of subsidies to oil companies or tax cuts to people making more than $200,000.

The question my column left open was whether improving the lines of communication would actually change anything. Chait’s view is no, it wouldn’t. He begins by quoting Upton Sinclair’s famous line: “It is impossible to make a man understand something if his livelihood depends on not understanding it.”

House Rep Paul Broun (GA) of "evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory" are all "lies straight from the pit of Hell." fame has announced he's going to run for Saxby-Chambliss's Senate seat. Now it's not a sure thing, but if tea party races in 2014 are like those in 2012, then with some work, this could be another opportunity to put a Democrat in the Senate.

CA Dems have a supermajority in both State houses. This means no unending wrangling with GOP to get a 2/3rds majority for basic things like passing a budget!

Gaffes don't matter: The Atlantic

by Chrisfs

I wanted to point to an article in The Atlantic that says that over a longer period gaffes don't affect poll results. So while it's good to see Romney messing up, it's not a reason to lay back and stop working for Obama. We 6 weeks left and we need to use each one of them to get out the vote and not sit back.

Melinda Gates, of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is a practicing Catholic. She has also come out saying she will be working to improve access to contraception around the world.
She's an example of religious people who transcend the either/or dichotomy of fundamentalist or not religious at all.
"She admitted, though, that she had agonised over whether to speak out in defiance of the church hierarchy. "Of course I wrestled with this. As a Catholic I believe in this religion, there are amazing things about this religion, amazing moral teachings that I do believe in, but I also have to think about how we keep women alive. I believe in not letting women die, I believe in not letting babies die, and to me that's more important than arguing about what method of contraception [is right].""

78% of laypersons 76% of clergy voted for it. Another step forward in progress.
"With the vote, the Episcopal Church will become the largest U.S. denomination to officially sanction same-sex relationships. The Episcopal Church has about 1.95 million members in the United States"

Waiting for O'Reily's apology

by Chrisfs

Short diary, but too good to pass up.
From March 26 show of O'Reily Factor, Bill O'Reily states he will apologize for being an idiot if ACA is found constitutional. http://mediamatters.org/...
Skip to the 4 minute mark to avoid seeing Bill jerk around his guest.
