Bill Clinton, after the slaves were freed, noted that Lincoln had orignally advocated against abolition and against equality and that he should keep his promise by allowing existing slave holders to be grandfathered in. He felt it was unfair to the young slave holding couple to change their ways and be inconvenienced in having to treat others humanely and be personally responsible for a better society. Additionally, the slaves themselves were not familiar with any other way of life, so they would need to have an adjustment period before allowing them to become free.

I know Bill is a politician, but I do not think he is doing Hillary any favors. He wants people to keep their original plan, aka no healthcare, bad insurance, aka Hillarycare (because really that plan never passed and the time before Obamacare should be called Hillarycare for their failure to pass healthcare even if they had valid reasons).
There is no courage of leadership protecting the stutus quo. WHat if Lyndon Johnson gave people time before allowing Civil Rights to kick in, that would not be leadership. Build upon what is done and improve that (eg. CIvil Rights was an improvement on abolition. It is hard enough to deal with the bad guys who want to turn back progress)

"on September 18, 1858, Lincoln made his position clear. “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races,” he began, going on to say that he opposed blacks having the right to vote, to serve on juries, to hold office and to intermarry with whites"
