The media keeps getting it wrong (again). The “tapes” the trump tweeted about have nothing to do with intimidating Comey. It is a power play designed to influence his base and give plausibility to his narrative. I wager that there are no tapes. If there are, they will undoubtedly tell a different story than the one the occupant of the WH tells.
It is bluster and only the most naive can think it is a threat to Comey. It is just another lie.
I once had a duplicitous boss who gave me an order to do something illegal (which I refused). I explained why I would not engage in the act. He dragged me before the agency director to say I was insubordinate. In that meeting, he changed his story about what he had asked me to do. I said, “Well, Dave, if I played a tape of our meeting, would you stick to that story?” While it was a stupid and impulsive retort on my part, he stammered that just maybe what he had directed me to do did in fact break state law.
The director reported me to HR for “secretly recording a conversation” which is illegal in California. I explained to HR that it was a verbal warning issued to jog his memory, and HR believed me.
I was reassigned to another agency with more ethical leadership. Nonetheless, the first director repeatedly told others that I had secretly recorded conversations.
