Ami Bera now leads

by EarlGreyHot

Haven't seen a diary about this. Just saw the news that Ami Bera (D) now leads Doug Ose (R) by 711 votes in the CA-7 House race count. This is extremely promising news and it looks like Ose will not return to the House (in his TV appearances in local news he comes off as an extremely unpleasant fellow, projecting an attitude of entitlement).

American history in photos

by EarlGreyHot

Previous generations have left us a priceless legacy of American history: detailed photographic records dating back to the Civil War. These "vintage photos" are a fascinating glimpse into times gone by, and the lives of the people who lived then.

The most detailed photographic documentation dates from the heyday of socially conscious photography: the period from the Great Depression through World War II. [More after ye squiggle.]

We're going solar this week

by EarlGreyHot

After years of wanting to, finally this week we're having solar panels installed on our house! My wife has been the main impetus, making noise about reducing our carbon footprint, but I've been interested in solar for a long time. The issue has been price (naturally).

More below the fold...

My mother's abortion story

by EarlGreyHot

My late mother, conservative in many respects (though later in life she said that my sister and I "turned her liberal"), was always very outspokenly pro-choice. I never knew what was behind her views, until on one of my last visits to her, she told me this story.

Our Thanksgiving Dinner

by EarlGreyHot

We have an unconventional Thanksgiving meal tradition in our household. We don't eat turkey, so about 8 years ago we asked the kids (then in early teens) what they wanted for Thanksgiving dinner. Their surprising response: "shrimp tacos". So that's been our mainstay ever since then.

So here is our menu for the day:

Several weeks ago I wrote to my senator, Dianne Feinstein, regarding the health care issue. I was disturbed by reports (here and elsewhere) about her not being on board with a public option, so I wrote expressing my strong support for a public option and dismay with the current state of for-profit health care. Today I heard back from her:

How to deal with right-wing hate

by EarlGreyHot

Going forward into (what I hope, pray, and dare to assume will be) the Obama administration, I have no doubt that we will be facing (just as during the Clinton administration) an ongoing right-wing sleazefest of conspiracy theories, unhinged accusations and hate-mongering, all tinged subtly (or not-so-subtly) by racial hatred.

The question is, what's the most effective way to respond? Some thoughts after the jump...

Trying to convince my dad...

by EarlGreyHot

My dad is a lifelong conservative Republican (I must have missed that gene...). He lives in rural western Pennsylvania. I spoke with him on the phone last weekend. I don't have a history of talking politics with him (think head/brick wall) but I couldn't resist saying that it looks like PA will be going for Obama. He agreed but then said that he would still be supporting McCain. I expected that but what floored me was his exuberant praise of Palin. Arrgh! I tried telling him that she lied all the time but the conversation was going nowhere so I just closed by saying "You have the chance to be on the right side of history here."

Obama Adminstration Wishlist!

by EarlGreyHot

I know the game isn't over yet (though I do think I hear the fat lady warming up offstage... :) and we need to keep our eyes on the prize, but nevertheless I thought it might be a nice diversion to imagine several of the big policy changes I'd like to see happen in an Obama administration.
