My wife and I had the honor of going to today’s Black Women’s March in Sacramento, California. It was the second annual such march. We were not the only white people there, but there was not a huge number of us. From the start when we showed up at the pre-march gathering site, we were made welcome by the women of color, who would come up and ask how we were and saying “We’re glad you’re here.” The march itself, to the State Capitol, of course, was led by an amazing drumline keeping the energy high. Then at the Capitol, the speeches began. I was so impressed by the energy, emotion, and intelligence of the speakers. I think it is crucial for white people who want to be allies for people of color to go to events like this. It’s an immersive learning experience.
Today’s march also solidifies the view which has been growing in me for awhile: if America is to be saved or redeemed, it will be women of color who do it.
