Being a victim of discrimination is not easy. Research shows that targets of discrimination are at higher risk for a range of negative mental and physical health outcomes, including increased symptoms of depression, heightened stress reactivity, increased risk of suffering from a mental health disorder, and greater substance abuse. Findings recently published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin suggest another burden for oppressed minorities:

...we propose that stigmatized group members are expected to be more tolerant toward other disadvantaged groups relative to non-stigmatized group members.
You read that correctly. The majority has higher standards of tolerance toward outgroups for minorities than for other members of the majority group. Why? Details and explanation below the fold.

While some are more then willing to ignore or blow off the comments of "Terrible" Ted Nugent to the NRA as simply being the ramblings of an aging irrelevant rock star, there are very good reasons to consider the probability that more than a few of his fellow NRA travellers really are taking him seriously and literally.

Nugent called President Obama a criminal and denounced his “vile, evil America-hating administration” which is “wiping its ass with the Constitution.” Taking it a step further, he said that “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.” “If you can’t galvanize and promote and recruit people to vote for Mitt Romney, we’re done,” he continued.  "We are Braveheart, we need to chop their heads off in November!"
Was he just talking about voting?  Sure, just like Sarah Palin was only talking about Voting when she said "Don't Retreat, Reload".  And how do we know it's not just a metaphor?  How do we know that chances are, someone, somewhere will act on this?

Because it's happened before.  And not just once. Or Twice. It's been dozens of times.

The trial of Anders Breivik has begun. Here is the self defense argument taken to its absurdist conclusion: self defense against Muslims taking over white nations. He appears to have modified Hitler's salute by closing his fist instead.

With a defiant closed-fist salute, a right-wing fanatic admitted Monday to a bomb-and-shooting massacre that killed 77 people in Norway but pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he was acting in self-defense.

On the first day of his long-awaited trial, Anders Behring Breivik rejected the authority of the court as it sought to assign responsibility for the July 22 attacks that shocked Norway and jolted the image of terrorism in Europe.

Eight people were killed in Breivik's bombing of Oslo's government district and 69 were slain in his shooting massacre at the left-leaning Labor Party's youth camp on Utoya island outside the capital. Breivik has said the attacks were necessary to protect Norway from being taken over by Muslims.

"I admit to the acts, but not criminal guilt," he told the court, insisting he had acted in self-defense.

And he does not recognize the authority of the Norwegian government or courts.
I don't recognize Norwegian courts because you get your mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism," Breivik said in his first comments to the court.

Pure. Undiluted. Evil.

Some moments in our lives can show who and what we truly are. We can rise to the occasion with courage, faith, love, hope, empathy, grace and affection or we can fall to the depths of envy, anger, distrust, fear, hatred and bile.

This diary is not about the former.

It would seem bad enough when Glen Beck's "The Blaze" came out in defense of George Zimmerman, not only arguing that what he did was "Perfectly Legal" if Trayvon Martin was the aggressor, but going further to argue that he must have been the aggressor because he was once suspended from school, and then intimating that the suspension could have been for any reason including "Arson, Sexual Assault, Vandalism, Bullying, Kidnapping, Battery and even Murder".

(Video is from "The Young Turks" discussing the Beck Web Posting with outrage)

Seriously, people get 10-day suspensions for Murder where those guys come from?  Really?  What do you get for Genocide? Corporal Punishment? Expulsion?

(Ed: As it turns out he was suspended 5-days for Tardiness.  Obviously a Capital Offense)

Math was Trayvon's favorite subject.

He liked to tinker, and he was good with his hands. He once took apart and repaired a broken scooter, Fulton said, and he liked to construct model cars and airplanes and draw pictures of things he wanted to build.

"He was extremely creative," said Michelle Kypriss, Trayvon's English teacher at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in Miami. "He just loved building things. He really was intrigued by how things worked."

She described Trayvon, a junior, as an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.

"Trayvon was not a violent or dangerous child. He was not known for misbehaving," the teacher said. "He was suspended because he was late too many times."

This is made I think even more filthy and disgusting when you watch Trayvon's father walk through the murder scene - which is just 70 yards from his home - and describe how Trayvon saved his life by pulling him out of a house fire when he was just 9 years-old.

I post this in contrast to what comes next.  If we are to be known by our works, it's clear that Trayvon was a Hero, and that he had great potential to do even more good works.

But that's not how some people see it.  Follow me over the flip only if you are strong of stomach and brave of heart.

In the minutes before the shooting of Trayvon Martin, it appears there was yet another witness.  Trayvon was using his cellphone (which remains missing) as he was stalked, hunted and Lynched by George Zimmerman.

In the final moments of his life, Trayvon Martin was being hounded by a strange man on a cellphone who ran after him, cornered him and confronted him, according to the teenage girl whose call logs show she was on the phone with the 17-year-old boy in the moments before neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot him dead.

"He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man," Martin's friend said. "I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run but he said he was not going to run."

Eventually he would run, said the girl, thinking that he'd managed to escape. But suddenly the strange man was back, cornering Martin.

"Trayvon said, 'What, are you following me for,' and the man said, 'What are you doing here.' Next thing I hear is somebody pushing, and somebody pushed Trayvon because the head set just fell. I called him again and he didn't answer the phone."

It's very clear that Trayvon was no threat.  But the question is will this information make a difference to local police and can even the newly announced Federal Investigation (or Grand Jury) bring justice to Trayvon Martin?

I have my doubts.

She Said Yes!

A break from the usual clichéd marriage proposals at sporting events. The NHL has really been breaking down barriers lately, almost alone among major sports leagues. Witness this You Can Play video just released. Or where gay hockey players are finally coming out.

(Yahoo) On Saturday night at Scotiabank Place, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan named Alicia stood on the ice during the second intermission wearing a blindfold. When it was removed, she looked up at the video scoreboard and read a message from her girlfriend, an Ottawa Senators fan named Christina.

Schmaltzy music played. Out walked Christina. They embraced and had a brief conversation, as the crowd began to wise up to what was about to happen.

Christina dropped to one knee while holding Alicia's hand. The fans roared. She slid the engagement ring on, they shared a kiss and the Senators mascot proudly raised a sign that read "SHE SAID YES." Just another night at the rink, eh?

I have little patience for melodramatic TTFN's and GBCW's written to garner attention and sympathy. This is real. And its permanent. I'm not sick. I'm not depressed. I don't have a fancy new job that precludes me from blogging. I am entering a critical phase of my graduate training and I've decided its time for me to move on. It's that simple.

By now most of you know the horrifying story of Gato, the cat who belonged to Jake Burris, campaign manager for the Ken Aden for Congress campaign in Arkansas.  Sunday night, Jake and his young children found Gato brutally slaughtered on their front porch, the word "LIBERAL" written across her body.  Well, since we broke the story on Blue Arkansas yesterday it has attracted national attention, and now as a friend of Ken's and Jake's I'm asking all of you to help us send a message loud and clear that this kind of terrorism and intimidation will not be tolerated, in Arkansas or anywhere else in the country.

Today, we starteda money bomb for Ken's campaign.  Neither Ken nor his staff have any idea that we're doing this, and we're hoping to give them a nice little surprise over the next few days by showing them a groundswell of support in the face of this terrible act.  We want to send a message to the person who did this and anyone else who would do such a gruesome thing-acts of violence will not intimidate us and will not defeat us.  It will only band us together and strengthen our resolve.

"Newt" And Other N-Words

by MacDaffy

Reposted from MacDaffy by Frank Vyan Walton

Wow! That South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary battle was the most bracing bit of race baiting, dog-whistle political campaigning I've seen since Lee Atwater draped Willie Horton around Michael Dukakis's neck in 1988. Rick Santorum declared that he did not want to make "blah people's" lives better by giving them "other people's money" even as he traveled the state fueled by other people's money. Ron Paul is unable to escape the stench of those "How To Off A Black Carjacker And Get Away With It" newsletters of the early Nineties. And Mitt Romney is an avuncular, über-rich fathead confused by any black person who isn't carrying a microphone, sports gear, or a serving tray. But for the winner--in actual votes, and for sheer bigoted pungency--we have Newton Leroy McPherson Gingrich.

Ol' Newt started with the suggestion that school districts across the nation could save money and improve the character and station of the black race by firing union-affiliated school janitors and replacing them with underaged African-American kids. He gave a spirited defense of this version of The White Man's Burden in a debate on CNN a week ago Monday, followed that up by flatly stating that Fox News contributor Juan Williams wouldn't know honest work if it bit him on the ass, and then Newt surged to victory on Saturday with an unmistakeable appeal to white South Carolinians to help him turn back the rising tide of pimps, drug dealers, welfare queens, and their shiftless, work-impaired pickaninnies by deposing their King: Barack Hussein Obama, The Food Stamp President.

Yes, Newt Gingrich, the people of South Carolina, Newt's fellow candidates and the Republican Party have served notice: They're fed up with Niggers, from the Big One in the White House down to that very last little fifth-grader without a mop. Vote Republican and the Great Reckoning will come. The country will recover the proceeds from all those bogus mortgage loans lavished on the rabble by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac thanks to Bill Clinton, they'll ignite the all-consuming blaze of the Christian work ethic in the heretofore benighted, and apply the brakes to the deficit-fueling gravy train that is the Food Stamp Program.

In other words: Heaven-on-earth.

One little problem…

Imagine a Southern supermarket checkout line with one of Newt's faithful holding forth to the cashier about how nice this country's going to be once Newt gets rid of all these "food stamp niggers." Now, imagine that you're a white waitress with five hungry kids and you're standing right behind him, your hand clutching that book of food stamps in your purse…

One sacrifices accuracy for coverage in painting with a broad brush [USA Today]; the artist formerly known as Leroy McPherson makes Jackson Pollack look like Mondrian with this masterpiece. Thanks to Newt and the Republicans of South Carolina, if you're on food stamps under the regime of The Food Stamp President, you're part of the problem no matter what color you are. That food stamp book is your "Scarlet A"… your passbook… your "skin"…

Modern dictionary definitions of the word "nigger" divorce it from race. It denotes a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economically, politically, or socially disenfranchised []. The American Middle Class is disappearing faster than a drifting Artic floe under a polar bear.  How we deal with income inequity is the crucial issue of our time and rhetoric like Newt's sharpens rather than diminishes the conflict between the One Percent and everyone else because he has miscalculated so horribly in trying to drive this wedge. Speaker Gingrich's South Carolina campaign has raised consciousness about the Occupy Movement in some of the very people he intended to inflame against President Obama and the Democrats.

Newt is no stranger to unintended consequences. His career since becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives is a monument to the concept. The only question remaining is how White America will answer this latest attempt to profit from the historical divisions created by the One Percent to control the other Ninety-Nine.

On April 22 1993, Stephen Lawrence a promising young black man was murdered while waiting at a bus stop with his friend Duwayne Brooks . It was an unprovoked racist attack in which the young men were racially abused and then Stephen having been stabbed twice, bled to death. The attack by a gang of white youths lasted less than a minute. There were 5 initial suspects, of which two men have been convicted, finally, of murder. The overturn of the double jeopardy verdict enabled Gary Dobson to face trial again for the crime (he had previously been acquitted) along with David Norris. After 18 years, two men were found guilty of murder today. There are still 9 other people of interest that are under investigation (

If so, there's a reason. And its not that you are homophobic. New research from the University of Toronto suggests that some gay men might have gay faces.
