I would have thought such information would have come from some of 'the Snowden files' (hey that has a ring to it) but it came from just some ole run of the mill research. Information that is out there if you just look in the right places. It appears that local governments and police departments are the ones buying this equipment in addition to the Feds. Certainly violating all kinds of laws and Constitutional protections.

At first glance some of these devices look unimpressive, but looks can be deceiving. Some of these things go by the names of Stingray, Gossamer, Triggerfish, Kingfish, Amberjack, Harpoon and Hailstorm (maybe someone can explain the meaning of some of these less obvious names). These devices are all for mobile phone monitoring. All of these devices are from one Florida company 'Harris Corporation'. Its likely there are more companies like this, and the sky is the limit as to their specialties. Who knows what's out there... and as for those names, so much for originality.

Take a look at Big Brother.

In an effort to inform the debate around controversial covert government tactics, Ars has compiled a list of this equipment by scrutinizing publicly available purchasing contracts published on government websites and marketing materials obtained through equipment resellers. Disclosed, in some cases for the first time, are photographs of the Harris spy tools, their cost, names, capabilities, and the agencies known to have purchased them.
Earlier this year, a covert tool called the “Stingray” that can gather data from hundreds of phones over targeted areas attracted international attention. Rights groups alleged that its use could be unlawful. But the same company that exclusively manufacturers the Stingray—Florida-based Harris Corporation—has for years been selling government agencies an entire range of secretive mobile phone surveillance technologies from a catalogue that it conceals from the public on national security grounds.

What do you think about the chosen names for these devices?

More Brazil NSA fallout with Update

by FLS

I guess most by now are aware of President Dilma Rousseff's postponed 'insert air quotes here' trip to the USA. I say this because she has been under a lot of pressure from Brazilians. She has been criticized that her government's response to the NSA/US spying on brazilians/the brazilian government and its institutions has been lack lustered/lacking substance. So it was with no surprise to me the she canceled the trip (add wink and a smile here). So when she says she is postponing her trip it comes off as her just going through the motions of being outraged, "I'm outraged I tell ya" (translate to portuguese)

Ms Rousseff's state visit was to have started on 23 October and would have been the first by a Brazilian president since 1995.

But in a statement on Tuesday, the Brazilian government said that "given the proximity of the scheduled state visit to Washington - and in the absence of a timely investigation of the incident, with corresponding explanations and the commitment to cease the interception activities" it could not go ahead as planned.

The statement said Brazil hoped the visit would take place "as soon as possible", once the issue had been "resolved properly".

My sense is she does not want to necessarily make waves with the USA, but at the same time wants to be seen as a strong leader standing up to the US at home (this is what brazilians are demanding). They see this as an attack on their country, to the level of possible espionage.

Now the last development which I think see the real fallout. It something that may have occurred anyway but this gives the impetus for this to occur sooner. That is the restructuring of the internet infrastructure.

Hello Obama Tax Cuts poll

by FLS

Now with all the political grandstanding and delay that went along with this Fiscal Cliff jump. Repubs have once again unwittingly lost the words of words. As they tried to tag Pres Obama with the supposedly pejoritive term 'ObamaCare', the term that is now completely embraced by Pres Obama and Dems.

By jumping off the cliff Repubs have put an end to the Bush tax cuts, now Obama has another bragging right, ie claim to fame 'Obama Tax cuts'. The House voted 257 yes to 167 against the Obama tax cut.

Not only have Repugs given Obama 450k tax cut bragging rights, 151 Repubs went down as voting against a tax cut. As much as they were afraid of voting for a tax increase, they go down on record as voting against a tax cut. Not sure which campaign refrain is worse, or maybe it only matters what Grover thinks.

PS. 450K tax cut is much better deal for the middle class than a 250k. 250k always seemed to be arbitrary, too low and at the margins. 250k tax cut would easily have become outdated before people have a chance to grow beyond it. We need to look beyond the short term. There is little cushion at 250K, especially if your married with 2 kids and looking forward to paying two college tuitions.

The Hack Squad ... Sen Ayotte??

by FLS

This diary is mainly to ask the question 'why?' Why did Sen Ayotte decide to join and lend her face to the Hack Squad. This now group of three Sen McCain, Graham and Ayotte has taken this whole Benghazi thing to another level.

Everyone knows, atleast everyone here see the baseless, partisan, maybe racist subliminal message that is been sent by this group of three as to why they continue to attack Amb. Rice. After all if they really wanted to find out what happened they would be going after the people in charge like President Obama, Secretary Clinton and/or the CIA/Petraeus for these would be the sources of pertinent information.

So why aren't they attacking Pres. Obama, after all he extended an open invitation for them to do so. So why so after them messenger? Don't they think it's obvious, their lack of forthrightness?

Will this affect Sen Ayotte re election?

This is just an update of a potential October surprise for team Romulus. I found this link buried at CNN. No information yet as to what's in Romney's testimony.

The press has been interestingly silent on these developments. This is just an update. Unless details of Romney's testimony are released before Nov 6, it will have zero impact.

Romney is alleged to have lied during his friend's divorce proceedings, low balling the value of his friend's interest in 'Staples' which had not gone public yet. Romney did take Staples public soon after the divorce proceedings had been finalized.

Kinda funny, the only thing is this suit has substance vs Fox's self serving failed endeavor against Missouri Sec. of State Robin Carnahan.

I haven't heard anyone talking about this. It would be interesting to see how this plays out in the media.

Gov Christie caught in a lie

by FLS

Old news? maybe not. There should be a rule against firing someone to make them the fall guy... then piling on smears after the fact.

Christie should know that there is only so much his ex education commissioner Schundler would take. Especially since Schundler is sitting good with his new unemployment benefits (the same benefits he and his party rail against, until of course they need it).

Now Schundler is hitting back ... with a hand full of  emails as proof, detailing what really happened and showing that Christie was intent on blaming Pres Obama despite the facts.

In the beginning I thought this was going to be a one day story, now who knows...

Coakley Campaign Charges Fraud

by Nathan Empsall, Tue Jan 19, 2010 at 05:32:13 PM EST

Kevin Conroy, Martha Coakley's campaign manager, just sent out this e-mail in the heat of election day:

We've received several independent and disturbing reports of voters across the state being handed ballots that are already marked in favor of Scott Brown.  This is obviously a serious violation, and our legal team is taking immediate steps to protect the integrity of this election.

I'm reading this article and I'm thinking to myself. What the fuck? What's the point of all sh#t? Voting for Obama when they feed you the good lines and side with crooks in the final analysis. What's even more perplexing is that you have people like Barney Frank on the same page.

Am I missing something? Why would Barney frank and Obama side on letting this new regulating agency be under the control of the Treasury, yeah maybe for the short term it would be under the watchful eye of your 'fox', a Dem guarding the henhouse but that would not be forever, and hey I don't even trust the fox, the Dems have ie Obama/Geithner.

Rep Ellison tried introducing an amendment making the new agency fully independent from Congress and the White House but Barney Frank is said to have blocked his attempt. Hopefully Rep Ellison reintroduces it to the full House on a floor vote or the Senate's version gives the agency full independence... haha fat chance. What the point ... I think we all know. It's just for show.

I'll ask again. Am I missing something...?

This is a story off a Fox News link so take with a grain of salt, nonetheless an interesting development.

Specter thought he would be able to get away with being another Sen Judas. He didn't bank on the Dem caucus putting him in check. After all, how can you blame him, he had Lie-berman's playbook to go off from. Specter stupidly showed his hand to quickly. Regardless of the most recent Dem cave to give him a sub committee gavel. Sen Lie-berman I mean Specter has been put on notice that he has to earn his place in the Dem caucus and he has until 2010 Dem primary to do it (probably sooner than that).

Now with Ridge bailing from the repug boat there is nothing in the way of a well funded, issued based Dem challenger to Specter in a Dem primary. So Specter if you are smart you'll rethink your positions on the Employee Free Choice Act and Cap and Trade among other hot button issues, you should put a button on your lip"

Note to Specter your not as important as you think you are.

Not so fast Specter Sen Leahy has something to say...

I was wondering when someone was going to make note of the next likely step, since the release of the CIA memos. I think the clock was ticking for the true story to come out about the convicted soldiers from Abu Graib. Lets not forget Gen Janis Karpinski the general that was also scapegoated, although I'm not sure what to make of her shoplifting charge.

Attorney General Holder has his work cut out for him. I am not sure however what portion of this if any falls under his jurisdiction, becuase all parties I think were trialed and convicted in military courts.

Bush et. al. f@#k up a lot of careers here.
