Here's a video of a foreign policy expert explaining why we should not have invaded Iraq. This man fully understands that such an invasion could only cause the chaos that is happening now.

For your viewing pleasure:

I'm especially impressed by his knowledge of the longstanding tensions in the region and by his concern for American casualties. Aren't you?

We should have listened to this man!

A sad sad day.

The famous Tunch, John Cole's very fat kitteh and mascot of the Balloon Juice blog, has been killed.

Here is the thread: RIP, Tunch, The Best Cat Ever

UPDATE: Here is the link to MARC. John Cole is asking for donations there in honor of Tunch. It's a great pet rescue group.

I've posted several diaries about Bat World Sanctuary. Kossacks were wonderful in helping them get enough money to finish the Bat Castle. It is finished, and we're waiting for the big move-in, at which time I'll do another diary on that.

But now we've got a crucial deadline coming up tomorrow. Bat World Sanctuary is in a wonderful contest: The Groupon Earth Day Green Charity Challenge. We need you to click on that link and send 'em some money!!! The charity that collects the most wins! They were in first place all weekend. As I write this they're only a couple of hundred dollars behind. The contest ends tomorrow on May 15th!

Why this is important:

First place wins $25,000
Second place wins $15,000
This place wins $10,000

That's an extra ten thousand dollars if they win!! Imagine how many little lives they can save with that!

Harmon 4:6:12

Seventy-five feet up in a cottonwood tree in western Minnesota, two young bald eagles were raising their two eaglets. There is a webcam (solar powered, so not active at night). Watchers thrilled when the eggs hatched and the babies grew. They named the babies Harmon and Kirby. Then last Monday, eaglet Kirby fell out of the nest and was killed. (These are not the Decorah Eagles, who are in Iowa. All three eaglets in Decorah are thriving.)

Then the remaining eaglet, three-week old Harmon, somehow became entangled by something in the nesting material. (That's Harmon above. They put him down in the grass for just a moment while they readied the lift.) He struggled to free himself for almost two days. The raptor experts decided to intervene, and with a lift truck provided by the broadband company hosting the webcam, they went up to free him and discovered that he was in very bad shape. To save his little life, they took him from the nest and treated him at the University of Minnesota Raptor Center.

Here's the video explaining why they intervened:

Last Wednesday and Saturday, I posted two diaries begging for donations to Bat World Sanctuary to help build the Bat Castle, which will house thousands of bats that soon will be evicted from their decades-long homes.

We raised $762! That will buy a lot of cement blocks for the Castle!

For thanks, below the squiggle find photos of the partially completed Castle, new amazing videos (including one of Lil' Drac), and how you can ADOPT a bat, including Lil' Drac!

Just under the orange squiggle are two videos that melted a million hearts. And they're about a baby bat! Can they get your attention, and get some help for the bats? Perhaps the most misunderstood animals on earth, bats might be called "the least of these." Although Lil' Drac, star of the videos, is just fine, Bat World needs help to save thousands more.

Bat World Sanctuary got a grant of $25,000 to build a Bat Castle that will house bats soon to be evicted from their decades-long homes in Mineral Wells, Texas. Now that they've started construction, they find they'll need MORE MONEY (surprise, surprise) by March 20th.

I hope you'll kick in just $5 to help finish the Bat Castle on their donation page HERE. Or, call Bat World to donate at 940-325-3404. (You can kick in more if you want, but just $5 from lots o' people will help enormously.) Anything they get in excess of what they need for the Bat Castle will go to constructing a new Bat World facility and teaching hospital on nearby land. But first . . .

I'll Miss the Pooties

by Fonsia

I came here in 2007 to support Barack Obama for president. I enjoyed this place immensely for a long time, until it became a site that, seemingly officially, opposed the President.

At last, our newest Giant Panda baby has his name! He is YUN ZI, which means "Son of Cloud" (his momma is Bai Yun, "White Cloud"). The ceremony this morning at the San Diego Zoo revealed the name chosen by 17,526 votes from a list of five names submitted by panda fans. In keeping with Chinese tradition, panda cubs get their names when they are 100 days old, a milestone reached by our new little guy last Friday. As it was Friday the 13th, his naming ceremony was put off until today.

Scroll on to learn about Yun Zi, his family, and pandas! I hope you'll see here what amazing creatures they are. It's more than their appearance!

This week, I became confused. I'm 58 and uninsured. I thought the only thing that could save me was the public option. I've been uninsured since 2001. Haven't had a pap smear, a mammogram, or any other important test since then. I've never had a colonoscopy. I can't afford any of these things, and couldn't do anything about it even if they found something wrong. I'm a 24/7 unpaid family caregiver for my 91-year old father with advanced Parkinson's disease. Dad has some assets, so I'm not eligible for MediCal. We can't spend the assets. I'm stuck.

So I, along with most others here, was insisting that without a public option, Obama's plan couldn't be reform. I thought we had to have even a weak public option that could grow over time. We had to get that camel's nose under the tent. I was under the impression that most of the other advanced nations in the world, the ones with universal healthcare that works, were socialized.

Well knock me over with a feather; they're not. Read on to learn what they really are.
