A Culture of Fear

by Furious Hal

Hi folks, I know I haven't put up a diary in a long time. I've been pretty busy with family, school (finally graduated!) and work.

This is not a serious diary, nor one overly sarcastic. It's just something that happened to me the other day that I thought I would share.

As some of you know, I don't like Texas. While California and Minnesota and a few other states work hard and try to help their people, Texas has, since Enron, been the black sheep of America.

Some people have attributed this erratic, anti-social, and psycho-sociopathic behavior to various things, including mad-cow disease (my candidate) or just plain stupidity, but researchers have finally found a possible answer: the drinking water.

Report: Fixes Saved 1M Votes in 2004

Improvements to voting machines and election administration saved a million votes that otherwise would likely have gone uncounted in the 2004 elections, with states and counties that made the most comprehensive upgrades recovering the most votes, a new academic analysis says.

The report released Monday by the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project looked at a key measure of election integrity -- residual votes, or ballots cast during an election on which voters failed to mark a choice or machines did not record it.

Molly Ivins on Wit

by Furious Hal

Once in a while, as I'm trying to get the latest "This Modern World" out of the Working for Change website, I will read Molly Ivin's column, because I have often seen witty quotes by her in other people's sigs.

So far, she hasn't impressed me. "Texas wit" is almost an oxymoron, and while she may be the best humor columnist from Texas, that's kind of like saying "the shiniest wheel on a wheelbarrow" or "the heaviest feather."

However, this week's column is a meta-column (about a subject, rather than new information on a subject) about comedy and wit, and I thought it would be helpful to share it here.

In another story that I am diarying out of sheer disbelief, Paris Hilton and Nicole Simpson have been blocked from filming a segment of their hit reality series (sorry about the bold. I find it too hard to believe without bold) "The Simple Life" from a suburban middle school... in NEW JERSEY!

First of all, "fuck." Let's just get that out of the way in the beginning, shall we?

Ok, wikipedia is being hacked or something, as it crashed explorer within seconds of opening the page. So, I found around 3.5 ookamillion hits for "free speech primer" on google, and chose this one for no other reason than I clicked on it first.

A little tidbit:

All together, there are six (6) rights guaranteed by the First Amendment -- religion, speech, press, assembly, association, and petition -- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Collectively, they protect what is known as the freedom of expression (technically consisting of assembly, petition, press, and speech). Association is a derivative right from speech, assembly, and petition.

Peace honour for Margaret Hassan

Murdered aid worker Margaret Hassan has been given the Tipperary Peace Prize in Ireland for her charity work in Iraq.

The Care International official had "paid the ultimate price for her dedication to the poor and vulnerable in Iraq", the prize's convention said.

I just sent an email to Roger Ebert's regular bi-monthly "Answer Man" column.

I've tried submitting stuff before, but he hasn't printed any of it. So, today I decided not to be polite about it anymore.

My submission was to his "Ebert's Movie Glossary" subsection where he prints common movie cliches.
