Don't Back Down Mr. President!

by Johnny E

We should collectively be very angry at what a small minority of fringe extremist beneficiaries of gerrymandered districting is doing to this country. I regret that there is no legal way to remove from office these fanatical right-wing Tea Party freaks who have gone completely mad in their desire to obstruct our president's attempt to provide an affordable insurance option to the poor and working class. Their immoral strategy? Hold the country hostage by not passing a clean CR to fund the government. And make no mistake about it, the debt-ceiling, something far more catastrophic is next. Don't back down Mr. President. Don't give them a thing!

"The shooter at the Washington Navy Yard had a 'pattern of misconduct' as a Navy reservist, had sporadic run-ins with the law, and had contacted two Veterans Administration hospitals for apparent psychological issues" - CNN

No one who commits mass murder is well. The issue of guns aside for a moment, mental illness is a huge problem in this country and it's a conversation we must have. Many think that it's defined almost exclusively by the homeless in rags talking to themselves on the street. But that isn't even close to the truth, as the mentally ill are often what most would call functional members of society and you would never know the extent of their depression, anger and the intensity of the demons they harbor inside. They are your neighbors, your children's teachers, your co-workers, etc. And until they manifest their internal issues in a visible manner, or snap, they pass by silently and anonymously in the shadows. Or we miss and ignore the signs. There is excellent information on mental illness available on the National Institute Of Mental Health website.

With the critically important election understandably dominating the headlines, progressives are called upon to keep a careful eye on other ancillary but exigent issues that effect us all. Case in point, the chronic purveyors of pernicious climate change denial continue to wreak havoc quietly behind the scenes and it should come as no surprise that they do so with the implicit support and countenance of Fox News.

"We’re being stampeded into global warming regulation now".

So has said the morally threadbare Steven Milloy in his Junk Science column for Fox, as he flies along under most people's radar. Along with other denizens of the creep despots who provide fodder for Murdoch's broadcast and online rags, the remorselessly fanatical and dangerous Mr. Milloy has consistently endeared himself to global warming deniers and their polluting corporate enablers by tirelessly embracing extremist hyperbole and rhetoric on their behalf.

How 'bout a little out-of-this world fun.

It's uncanny and telling that both McCain and Palin have an almost identical astrological transit occuring leading up to and during the election. Neptune is the planet associated with spirituality at its highest, but deception and illusion at its lowest, is conjuncting (same sign) with Saturn, the planet of restrictions, challenges, lessons and pragmatism.

Suffice to say, both McCain and Palin, who have stooped to attacks, negativity, and smear in their campaign, will also happily have to face the devil, which is them - and their smear-fear strategy - in the form of the transit they both have during this time. Neptune in conjunction with Saturn basically means they will suffer confusion, fear, lack of confidence and a reality check of the highest order. Their close minded world will be challenged, and they will personally suffer from the effects of their choice to implement underhanded and highly immoral tactics.

Dr. Sylvain Ehrenfeld is a retired professor and mathematician living in New Jersey. He is also my uncle. This is a speech he was invited to give to the United Nations on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In it, he discusses the evolving options under consideration in the struggle to help the Israelis and the Palestinians forge some form of peaceful coexistence. It’s one of the more cerebral and practical assessments I’ve seen to date.

Few Americans know of the existence of Raymondville a federal dentention facility located just north of the Mexican border near Brownsville, Texas. Administered by another Bush administration private contractor, Management Training Corporation, the facility operates under a contract with the Department of Homeland Security. It’s mandate is to detain persons suspected of violating immigration law and more than 2000 prisoners currently are interned there awaiting processing and probable deportation. Poor and far from their homes, most inmates have no support from family, friends or support of any kind. But the real dirty, dark secret is that most of these prisoners are only "accused" of various immigration violations and are not required under the law to stay in detentions while they are being processed.

There is a reason that my friend's Bulldog Baxter, spends every waking hour tearing apart a George Bush chew toy.

Hidden amidst the human beings on this planet that have suffered at the hands of the Bush administration are millions of voiceless and helpless animals. No matter what one thinks of animals and their importance in our lives, most compassionate human beings would acknowledge that they deserve to be treated humanely and and offered some modicum of protection. George Bush doesn’t fall into that camp and that's another reason to celebrate his imminent departure. I know Baxter will.

Remembering Your Neo-Cons

by Johnny E

It is probable that no event in our lifetime will have as negative an impact on the United States and the world as the Iraq war has and the neo-con architects of this despotic adventurism assuredly bear the responsibility for it.

The celebrious philosopher, poet and cultural critic George Santayana was known to appreciate multiple perfections in humanity, but I am certain he never imagined the multiple imperfections of the neo-con despots described below. He did once prophetically muse,

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

With props to  thinkprogress.org for the factual information, let's take a look back at these political demons who were responsible for the Iraq War. As time marches inexorably on, we would be well served to always remember who they are and what they did.

While Sarah Palin and other McCain campaign surrogates disingenuously try to create a false perception of companionship between Barack Obama and William Ayers, John McCain is brazenly and openly associating with Roberto Martin Perez, a known terrorist supporter. Perez who has been a strong and vocal advocate for the McCain campaign in Florida, recently introduced McCain at a rally and the two hugged, yet no one seems to be talking about it.

Perez is by any reasonable definition a supporter of terrorism if not an out and out terrorist himself. The McCain camp though benignly calls Perez a "political prisoner" fighting for Cuba's freedom, but predictably they never mention Perez's extensive terrorist sympathies and ties to the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF). CANF has long been known as a terrorist group and known terrorist Luis Posada Carriles admitted receiving funding from CANF when he detonated a series of bombs in 1997 which targeted hotels, restaurants and discos, killing an innocent tourist.

Russian Navy Headed West

by Johnny E

While our nation is consumed with lipstick politics, for the first time since the end of the Cold War Russian navy warships are heading for the Western Hemisphere and our backyard to conduct joint military exercises with the Venezuelan navy. This coming at a time when U.S.-Russian relations are at their lowest point in decades.

It’s neither coincidental nor inconsequential that years of incessant Bush Administration saber rattling towards both Russia and Venezuela, the U.S European missile deal and U.S. criticism of Russia during their recent conflict with Georgia has served to greatly exacerbate tensions. With both countries in the process of creating a multifaceted strategic energy alliance and Russia selling billions of dollars of sophisticated armaments to Venezuela, this is a potentially disastrous conflict in the making where one misstep or daisy chain of events could set off another Cuban missile crisis scenario.

The Tragedy In Haiti - Can You Help?

by Johnny E

Knowing how genuine the Kos community and progressives are in their everyday concern for those less fortunate, I implore all of you to heighten your awareness of the misery that is plaguing Haiti right now and to consider lending a helping hand. Hurricane Ike is currently assaulting the impoverished island with torrential rains and in combination with the recent devastation of Gustav, Haiti will need rapid and massive assistance to deal with this latest disaster.

GOD HELP US ALL, SO HELP ME PALIN.

by Johnny E

Just when secular America thought it was safe to come out and play, Sarah Palin has appeared at the pulpit with a "literal" interpretation of the bible in hand and the pestilent wrath of her God alongside. Most voters know by now that Palin is a born again Christian and actively supports the core policies that are near and dear to the evangelical wing of the GOP. But what should really give voters pause is the specific religious doctrine of Pentecostal literalism that Palin believes in. This fringe Christianity is diabolically dangerous, and Sarah Palin is all in.
