So now you may be thinking, “Duh. There was no NATO in 1939.” Well yea. Of course.
But why was NATO created? “Never Again!” No madman will ever be allowed to roll across borders in Europe.
Hmmm, if NATO had existed in 1939 (bare with me please) would there have been appeasement? Perhaps not. "...an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all." —Article 5
Hindsight is easy. But can we learn from looking back? I certainly hope so.
Some are saying that we cannot afford the sacrifice of high fuel prices if we curtail purchasing oil and NG from Russia.
Some say the threat of Russia’s nuclear arms is too high for any direct kinetic involvement with Russia.
These concerns should be considered and evaluated separately.
But, the fact that Ukraine is not a part of NATO should not be weighty in that discussion. Neither was Poland in 1939.
I believe we need to do more and pay more to fight against Putin’s war. We must save Ukraine and re-establish their freedoms. We must demonstrate the power of the people of the world’s democracies and secure international law for all to see.
Easy to say. Not easy to do.
