The province that led the way to single payer healthcare in Canada has been having a tough time of it. The downswing in oil prices has meant less revenue for the government. It’s a reality that you can’t ignore. But the Conservative government of Saskatchewan has decided to take it out on poor people (as usual).
In the budget they announced this week, amazing services are being cut, but one that will be most felt across the province is the 50%-60% cut to Public Libraries. It’s horrific. The cities will find it tough, but what this is doing is closing all the rural libraries in the province. And in a province like Saskatchewan….there is a whole lot of rural.
Story about the cuts
Things were bad before this, I know librarians who have been fleeing the province because it was apparent the government didn’t think “bricks and mortar” libraries were important and you could get everything you wanted on the internet. But anyone who uses a library knows that’s not true. There is so much more happening at Libraries.
I know that the big fight right now is Trump, but if you can spare some time please let the Powers that Be in Saskatchewan that this cut makes them look backward in the eyes of the world. While cities like Calgary and Ottowa are building these new, modern libraries….Saskatchewan is going back in time :(
People you can write to:
The man who’s leading the cuts is Premier Brad Wall. He’s all about making a name for himself and not about actually looking after the people of his province. His e-mail is: premier@gov.sk.ca
The Minister of Education, who claims to want to promote literacy, Don Morgan. His e-mail is: minister.edu@gov.sk.ca
Please help your neighbours to the north!! Let Saskatchewan know that this is not the way to balance their books.
