An Injury to One Is An Injury to Us All

by PaulVA

Workers on the Long Island Rail Road have been without a contract since 2010. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has demanded benefit cuts and other concessions from workers.  MTA management has rejected recommendations from two Presidential Emergency Boards that would end the dispute.

Union members ask for nothing more than what both these neutral federal boards have already recommended.

Don't you just hate the smug look on Scott Walker's face?  A new video from We Are Wisconsin, the SMWIA (Sheet Metal Workers International Association) and the IUPAT (International Union of Painters and Allied Trades) does something about it.  The video takes on Scott Walker's attack on working people, voter rights and dismal jobs record.

Last Friday, the Daily Caller, founded by a failed MSNBC analyst, launched an attack on the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association by misrepresenting the actions of an SMWIA local union that provided unemployed members, and only unemployed members, with a stipend for when they invested their time in assisting their local union in its advocacy efforts.

"Scott Walker Cruises to Victory!"

That's a horrible headline.  Makes me  ill at the thought of it.

However, that's what the latest poll from Marquette University is telling us very well can happen unless we can find a candidate to take on Scott Walker:

Walker led Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, 50 percent to 44 percent; former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk 49 percent to 42 percent; former U.S. Rep. Dave Obey 49 percent to 43 percent and State Sen. Tim Cullen 50 percent to 40 percent. Source

Russ Feingold is widely considered to be not only one of the most progressive Senators we have had in the past 30 years, but he is also the standard bearer for the progressive tradition started in Wisconsin over a century ago.

He led the fight against the USA Patriot Act and the TARP bailout.  He was the co-drafter of the McCain-Feingold Campaign finance reform act and now, Wisconsin needs him again.

While there are others who can reverse what happened in Wisconsin under Governor Walker, Senator Feingold has the best chance of defeating him and would energize Wisconsin's progressive base.

Urge him to consider a run on the Democratic ticket to recall and replace Scott Walker.

Wisconsin’s Governor Scott Walker will be holding a budget signing ceremony at the Badger Sheet Metal Works facility in Ashwaubenon this Sunday, June 26th at 2PM.   While Walker’s budget would devastate Main Street businesses, public education, health care and programs for children and working families– it will actually continue to give tax handouts to some of the state’s richest individuals and special interests.

Yesterday, after hearing from officials from the Mortgage Bankers' Association, Peter S. Goodman, a business editor at the Huffington Post, decided to take it upon himself to FIRE Mike Elk, a labor reporter in Washington, DC who covered and helped break a story that exposed their lobbying for a back door bailout.

(See the CNBC video here)

If you have a Twitter account, help us fight back by visiting our petition here and sending a strong message to Goodman and the Huffington Post that this sort of censorship won't be tolerated.

Earlier today, about 200 union members from the Sheet Metal Workers International Association and International Union of Painters and Allied Trades broke into a conference held by the Mortgage Bankers' Association to ask what was done with a little known taxpayer financed giveaway that homebuilders like PulteGroup, for example, used to spend $900 million to acquire land rather than create jobs. As you can see from the video below, the mortgage brokers and executives seemed to be SHOCKED that a group of people would even dare break into their conference.
