The Chicago Tribune reported today that four U.S. Representatives from Illinois —Democrats Danny Davis, Bobby Rush, Jan Schakowsky, and Robin Kelly—sent a letter to the Chicago Bears’ owner Virginia McCaskey and Chairman George McCaskey criticizing their support for the NFL’s new national anthem policy. I don’t need to expound on the letter’s many fine points or why I also oppose this policy, at least not on this site, but if you want to read more, the article is on the Tribune’s website.
While my heart warms whenever I see a football player taking the knee or raising a fist during the national anthem, I am not a football fan. In fact, I am primarily a-sportical, the way far too many people are apolitical. But, I cherish my freedom and my rights. And this letter got me thinking that I want to let the NFL know what I think of its assault on democracy, freedom, and First Amendment rights. I sent an email to the Chicago Bears’ owner and chairman asking them to rescind their agreement with this policy and to not be complicit with Trump’s attempt to suppress our First Amendment rights. I don’t know if there are any petitions (such as thru Change.org or otherwise), or if this issue has already been discussed on Daily Kos, but I’d like to ask all the NFL teams to reverse their support for this policy. Any ideas on how to go about it? Anyone here willing to write some emails or make some calls?
Again, while I am not a sports fan, I fear we are heading down the same path as Germany in the past and I’d like to try to reverse that path.
