We should all take a cue from Feingold's concession speech.
"The people of Wisconsin have spoken, and I respect their decision," Mr. Feingold told a crowd at a hotel here in the town where he lives. He said he called Mr. Johnson and offered his help in the transition.
"Being your senator has been the greatest honor of my life," he said.
"You gave me my backbone," he added. Quoting Bob Dylan, he said, "My heart is not weary, it's light and free, and I've got nothing but affection for those who have sailed with me."
It is not clear what he will do next, but Mr. Feingold, 57, told the crowd: "It's on to the next fight, it's on to the next battle, it's on to 2012 and it is on to our next adventure, forward." He raised his fist in the air and left the stage.
