A commenter on another site posted a link tonight, to a great OpEd by Yvonne Abraham in the Boston Globe entitled Why I’m voting for Elizabeth Warren, but that’s not what made me write this (diary? blog? What are we calling it these days?) here though.
As I was reading the piece, one thing led to another, and an embedded link in it led me to this article by McKay Coppins in The Atlantic (paywall alert; it seems I still have "2 more free articles this month," YMMV) about the massive disinfo machine the Trumpublican mafia have built, an article that literally scared the bejeebus outta me. Really! Swear to god, I have zero bejeebus left in me now.
After reading it, I feel highly compelled to recommend it to every wonky, lefty, progressive seeker of truth and justice I can possibly reach, with whatever meager persuasiveness my little microself may be able to muster. Hence my appeal to you both here and at the Wother site. Quoth the article:
(Trump rally attendee) Tony Willnow, a 34-year-old maintenance worker who had an American flag wrapped around his head, observed that Trump had won because he said things no other politician would say. When I asked him if it mattered whether those things were true, he thought for a moment before answering. “He tells you what you want to hear,” Willnow said. “And I don’t know if it’s true or not—but it sounds good, so fuck it.”
Why is that guy so unconcerned about little things like “truth?” Turns out it’s not (or at least not just) because he’s a gullible, intellectually lazy consumer of Fox “News.” It’s way worse than that.
Seriously, go read it right now:
