Had this story come from the mouth of the typical MSM bobblehead, I’d pay it no mind. But Rachel Maddow should, and very likely does, know better.
On tonight’s show, Maddow declared that the Democratic New Hampshire primary actually ended in a tie because in addition to the nine delegates HRC won based on that stellar 38% of the popular vote, six of the Super Delegates have stated their preference for her, so that makes 15 delegates, just like Bernie Sanders won. Two SDs remain uncommitted. Ergo, NH is a tie!
I would encourage those who care about the substantive misrepresentation this presentation creates to contact Rachel Maddow. As we all know, Super Delegates aren’t obligated to vote for any candidate, and can change their minds as often as they want right up until they cast their votes at the convention. And should the voting go more than one round, they can change them again.
A more cynical person might perceive an attempt to promote a narrative that seeks to dampen the historic impact of Bernie Sanders’ victory last night. That seeks to communicate that HRC did something more than win the retired 1%ers demographic. That seeks to suggest that in spite of what people might think when a candidate captures 60% of the vote and then raises well over $5MM as a result in less than 24 hours, he’s still unelectable, and therefore his campaign is, at best, quixotic.
A more cynical person might, but instead, I’ll just note that Rachel’s Twitter handle is @Maddow. Let’s educate her as to how Super Delegates actually work.
