I'm not impressed

by ThatPoshGirl

This will be short and ranty.

The media has been gushing about how the new pope washed a Muslim woman's feet. My friends are posting the story on Facebook as if this is some major move forward for the Catholic church. I just have to say, I'm not impressed.

Who says this Muslim woman wanted some strange guy touching her feet? I sure wouldn't. Did she have a choice in the matter?

This is a Christian tradition specifically linked to Jesus Christ. To me, it just feels like the Catholic church is forcing their beliefs on a woman who can't even refuse or fight back because, as a foreign prisoner, she has limited rights.

How is that progress?

A commercial that makes me smile

by ThatPoshGirl

The first time I saw this commercial for the VW Passat I laughed out loud. The more I see it, the more I appreciate it, and it always makes me smile.

Resuming episode?

by ThatPoshGirl

Sorry for this non-diary, but does anyone else hear a woman with an accent (South African?) say "resuming episode" when they visit the front page? It's driving me crazy.

Middle-school shooting

by ThatPoshGirl

Two people have been injured in a shooting at an Atlanta middle-school. MSNBC doesn't seem to be covering it at all. FOX News is the only place I can find with info, crazy.

School officials say two people were wounded in the shooting. One of the victims was a 14-year-old, reports.

Arthur Douglas Harmon, the 70-year-old man who shot three people in a Phoenix office building yesterday, killing one and critically wounding another, has been found dead near his car in a Mesa park.

I wonder what video games he was playing?

If you don't have kids you have no value to society.

This is the message that I continuously receive as someone who is child-free by choice.

The most recent example came when I applied for a medical card in Arizona. I thought that since I have zero income and a chronic medical condition (PCOS) that I may finally qualify for assistance. Two months after submitting my application I received the following one-sentence denial:

This person does not live with an eligible dependent child.

Cat House on the Kings in Parlier, CA is a remarkable place. Twenty years ago, the owner, Lynea Lattanzio, decided to turn her entire property over to cats. The 12-acre no-cage, no-kill cat sanctuary is currently home to 700 permanent resident cats. The property is surrounded by a six foot tall fence, with a four foot inward facing overhang. The cats have free access to both indoor and outdoor spaces, including a 4,200 square foot ranch home. The permanent residents are cats that are considered unadoptable because they are either feral, too old or ill. She even has a separate FIV ward where they keep 10 - 12 FIV+ cats.

What Lynea is doing is amazing. Over the past 20 years she has saved the lives of over 20,000 cats who would otherwise be destined to live and die alone in cages.

We have a great opportunity right now to help Cat House on the Kings get much needed funding and it won't cost you a thing. ABC30 Action News has pledged 50 cents to KHOTK for each new like that their Facebook page receives before midnight tonight (12/31/2012 Pacific Time).

All you have to do is go to this page and click like, then CHOTK gets 50 cents. It's literally couldn't be easier.

So, please, like the facebook page and share this information with everyone you know.  So far, they've already raised almost $7000!

There is a video about Cat House on the Kings after the jump.

A lot of people are sharing their personal encounters with guns recently, so I thought I would share mine. It's not particularly profound, but I'll tell it anyway.

This happened more than a decade ago. I was around 14 years old and a new high school student. We lived about two miles from the high school. I have always been a relatively slow walker, so getting to the high school on time meant heading out pretty early.

A Walmart in Southern California has been evacuated after a man wearing camouflage entered with a rifle and asked to speak with the manager.

"Witnesses said the man was carrying an M-16 or a shotgun. We have not been able to confirm that," said Deputy Alberto Martinez.
Police set up a perimeter around the store while they searched for the "suspect." No word yet on if he was found.

Apparently Walmart doesn't mind selling rifles, but they don't want their customers to actually carry them inside the store.

The Walmart is in Moreno Valley.

Hello Kossacks!

This won't be a very long diary, but I hope you will consider it as important as I do.

I was looking at the new laws in Colorado and Washington State that legalize marijuana for recreational use. I think it is only a matter of time before we start seeing legislation like this passing all across the country. In fact, I have a feeling we will see President Obama make efforts to remove marijuana from the controlled substances lists before the end of his term.

There are a lot of advantages to this. The taxes will create new sources of revenue. No longer prosecuting these minor drug offenses will free up police time, reduce prison crowding and save states money. These are all great things.

There is also something else the legalization of marijuana could do, it could create jobs. Lots and lots of jobs. The only problem is, the new legislation doesn't guarantee those jobs will be created here in the US.

(more after the jump)
