DKos Asheville: Celtic Lassie's Quilt

by randallt

Reposted from DKos Asheville by Sara R
DKos Ashevillians traveled to Tennesee Wednesday to present Sara and Ann's amazing community quilt to Celtic Lassie with Otteray Scribe. A worthy dose of love from Kossacks. Gordon20024 drove down from Roanoke to meet us for the presentation and Joy of Fishes flew in on Tuesday and is there now. She is being the most loving mother hen in the whole world. When she tells you to "shoo" with that wonderful little smile and the twinkle in her eye, you know she means it. I'm sure all of us being there for OS meant the world to him. That's what families are for right? Additional help around the house would always be appreciated if anyone is able to help. Just let me know.

After we drove back to Asheville, we met up with DawnN and SteelerGrrl and Guy and had a nice meal at Rosetta's kitchen, Asheville's premier hippy vegetarian food and love cafe. I am hoping that some of us can get together again today. SteelerGrrl is attending a conference in Asheville this week so I was able to pick up a pair of tie dye sox from her for Celtic Lassie on the way to Tennessee Wednesday.

Please join us below the fold for a few photos. Thanks for being part of this community and please keep Chuck and Brandi and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

A Kossack Needs a Little Help

by Ojibwa

Reposted from Community Fundraisers by Angie in WA State

There are times when life gets a little financially rough. We have been asking for donations to help out elenacarlena.

So far, we’ve raised enough to cover her rent payment (which was due today), but we need to raise just a little bit more to give her and her pooties and woozle some living expenses for the next couple of weeks.

Please keep tipping and recommending so as many people as possible will see this diary! We only have a day to accomplish our goal. THANK YOU!

Due to a situation far beyond our control, the Derby Day Party and Fundraiser for elenacarlena did not reach the goal we had set. Total amount collected is $220.00. The original diary is HERE if you would like to see how the party went.

Now Elena's situation is critical. She must make her rent payment of $750 TOMORROW and she is $530.00 short. I will start things off with $30.00 leaving only $500.00 to go. That can be 50 people sending $10.00 each! I know this Community can do that.

I know there have been many requests for help, all for very worthy causes, and stretching everyone to the limit; but I know we can do this one more time for Elena who is a valued member of our Community. Here is what JekyllnHyde wrote in the diary:

I am joining Most Awesome Nana and several others in the Community Fundraisers group in strongly supporting this community effort for elenacarlena.  Ever since she joined Daily Kos, Elena has been a strong and regular presence while participating very widely and quickly becoming a valued community member.  As an example of this commitment, we have worked closely together (along with JoanMar, 2thanks, Tortmaster, and others) behind the scenes for the past year in helping to finalize and post weekly diaries on police brutality and Medicaid expansion through the Support the Dream Defenders group.  As you know, she is also a regular diarist for the War on Women diary series.

Please help Elena through this difficult time for her as well as her beloved pooties and woozle.  On behalf of the entire CFs group, thank you.  JekyllnHyde

Everyone will WIN THE ROSES TODAY!

Here's How You Can Help Elena

If you have a PayPal account and have never used it to send money to anyone, it is really simple.

  • Go to
  • Click Send Money to Family and Friends.
  • Enter elenacarlena's email address (which is and amount you are sending. The sender's name is visible to the recipient.
  • As a reminder, you can also help by keeping this diary on the Rec List, republishing to your Daily Kos groups, linking to your Facebook pages, and helping to spread the word through Twitter.

Thank you for caring and your generous contribution.

You can receive all future postings by clicking this link for the Community Fundraisers Group. Then, click 'Follow' and that will make all postings show up in 'My Stream' of your Daily Kos page.

Thank you for reading, tipping, rec'ing, sharing! And donating, too!

TrueBlueMajority's quilt

It breaks my heart that this quilt is needed -- yet it is needed, urgently.

UPDATE: The situation is dire.  CelticLassie's brother and sister-in-law are on their way.  When they arrive and all the tests are back, hospice will be consulted and decisions made.  We will pull out all the stops to get this quilt done and will need the messages ASAP.
A little backstory: CelticLassie survived cancer as an infant.  Otteray Scribe and his wife (a nurse) adopted her from St. Jude's, determined to save her life.  They lovingly nursed her to health with great success.  Up until now, she's had a very active and happy life.  But the monster (cancer) appears to be back.  Since Christmas, CelticLassie has had some trouble walking and has been in pain.  A few days ago, she fell and broke her hip.   When the hip was imaged, a huge pelvic mass was found.  The doctors think the mass has weakened her bones, thus the fracture.  It is also pressing on other parts.  Long story short, CelticLassie is in agony and is likely to be in the hospital for an extended period.  We are going to make a community quilt to support her spirit through this ordeal and would welcome loving messages from you for her.

As you will see below, she grew into a strong and lovely young woman with an infectious smile, a spirit for adventure, and a deep love of her family's Scottish heritage.  She is an accomplished piper, too -- not easy!  Some more photos below the orange cloud...

Welcome everyone to our Derby Day Party!

We are going to have a horse race (also known as the "most exciting two minutes in sports"), a few mint juleps, and a good time raising funds for our fellow Kossack, elenacarlena. Everyone is invited to join us to make a comment, tip, rec, republish, share on Facebook, promote on Twitter, send good vibes, or donate.

Elena is always ready to help others with information, good wishes and when possible, money. But now she is the one who needs help. Many of you read her previous diary and responded with great kindness. Unfortunately, the situation has not yet resolved itself. She still lacks enough funds for her special needs cats.

Please follow me below the bourbon fudge swirl for a few words from Elena.

Input for improvement welcome: comment or kosmail to diary writer. Revision is in process.

JOB  1:  Someone with permission of the kosak in trouble has written a diary stating who's the kosak in trouble, what help is needed, and what means are in place so help is receivable. Often you'll see the diary published by Community Fundraisers or a group the kosak in trouble is a member of (group publishing reaches friends immediately & makes updates possible by other group editors/admins in case the original diarist can't, says belinda ridgewood who magnificently writes a lot of them; also that anyone writing such diaries can kosmail to a Comm'ty Fndrsrs admin, ask to be made a contributor there, explain what your diary will be and when it needs to post; and group members there will help you if they can, if you keep communications open.)

JOB  2:  Go to the profile page of the kosak in trouble, find all groups in which the kosak is a member, and:

2A:  Readers who are editors/admins there republish the diary to those groups.

2B:  Contributors see if that's been done and if not queue it and kosmail repub requests "to help a member of the group" to 1 or 2 eds/admins at each whose profile page shows them currently active in DK.

Don't bother with Message-to-Group: it won't put a New Message alert in any
WELCOME BACK box & can go unseen forever. Don't worry if others are doing
the same as you: together the bases get covered better than any 1 or 3 alone.

2C:  Non-members check is it repub'ed at those groups? If not, kosmail the diary link to 1 or 2 active eds/admins at each, requesting repub to help group-member.  Don't worry etc.

JOB  3:  If the diary says where the kosak is, find groups in a 200-or-so mile radius in Where The Kogs Are — folks there may have friends/relatives nearer who might be able to help.
                  3A:  See 2A  ◄►  3B:  See 2B  ◄►  3C:  See 2C

JOB  4:  Check the DK Health-Med & Related Groups & Series to find groups focused on health or socioeconomic needs cited in the diary — members there may be knowledgeable about resources & coping.
                  4A:  See 2A  ◄►  4B:  See 2B  ◄►  4C:  See 2C

JOB  5:  Send the diary link to individual kosaks you know with expertise in that kind of emergency, or who are near it but not in a group where they'd read of it.

JOB  6:  Come back and recommend and tip the diary, and comment on:
6A:  what groups you repub'ed or queued or kosmailed the diary to with reasons why, so readers who don't know The JOB will learn it from you.
6B:  resources you have reason to know may be available where the kosak in trouble is, and how to reach those resources.
6c:  offer whatever donations and words of fellowship as always.

Why not "6c" first? Because time is of the essence to spread word far & wide in DK which mobilizes fully effective help fast and gets the diary heavily rec'd and tipped so word goes even further.  But emotion can pull us so deep into events that we get sidetracked from what's personally immediately powerful to do, while every delay multiplies geometrically all along the line, and things get scarier and worse than maybe have to. Since forever, telephone-trees, amazingly global 'ham' radio (my heroes!), bicyclers town to town, foot-runners, drums — come fire, flood, famine, avalanche, bush-war — people send out the call. And stay connected to check on each other in case of emergency, like Itzel Alert Network (in the first of the 2 lists in DK Health-Med&Etc Grps). Like all of DK can. So, spread the word - that's why.

Later, Job 7: kosaks wanting to stay help-ready can republish this to your groups (the section above the green line will shrink as revision addresses omissions), and periodically Move To Top so even in disorienting emergencies Dk grps have checklists to help us come through for each other.

New folks join DK constantly. Let's give them opportunities like this to matter, by their actions, right from the get-go.

What other virtual first-responder actions and groups should we remember and/or include, and where in the sequence? Are there diaries good to link here and repub and Move To Top at our groups? What ways of spreading word and mobilizing help do you recall from when you were a kid, or how your parents or g'parents did it? Or thru'out history!

BTW, reading the please-help diaries, I kept thinking: "when [troubles] come, they come not single spies, but in battalions" ...from Hamlet, Act IV, Sc 5. This week we also had diaries on how Shakespeare continues to speak to our lives.  10-Q 4 the inspiration of all the diaries.

Last Thursday, I asked for your help with expenses and with a title for my new cartoon, and y'all came through beautifully.  The result is that my immediate bills are covered, although I still need money for rent.  And I have a perfect title for my cartoon series:  Les Beastiables (Les Bez for short!)!  Over the weekend, I arranged for ownership of the domain names, but I still have issues getting the Web site up and running.

All who took part have my undying thanks.  The winners of the Kontest are those who discussed all things beastly:  Besame, Compost On The Weeds, and Smoh; along with penelope pnortney for reminding me of the Scottish poem.  And also Alhambra for suggesting something French, which reminded me that French always classes up the joint.  But all the suggestions were fantastic and were considered at length!

[NOTE FOR THE CURIOUS:  The names are Franglish.  Beastiables and Bez are not actual French words!]

Each week, I plan to draw a new beastie (or it may be an old beastie saying something beastlier than the last time!), to be posted every Tuesday evening (here and at  Hopefully Les Bez will be widely shared on social media, so that the human beasts who inspired them will be remembered for their beastliness; and so that, depending on who they are, they will be voted against, their TV shows turned off, their shops boycotted, as appropriate.  Hopefully with all our efforts, we can turn things around so that this country never looks like that in Les Miz.

From Les Beastiables,
Good Lord, deliver us!

$343 is not that much money...but it is needed by tomorrow. I posted a diary earlier via the Daily Kos Fund Raisers group, but it didn't get much attention and only raised $60 - which I and Fineena are both very grateful for - but she's in a jam and needs the additional $343 so she can pay for her dentist's appointment tomorrow morning.

Please rec this diary and kick in a little if you can. If enough of us give just a little, we should be able to do this. It's really not that much money spread over the dkos audience. Let's get some attention for this cause so we can ease Fineena's mind about tomorrow.

And thank you to the daily kos community for all you do.

I'll repeat the pertinent info from the earlier diary below the thing to provide context and the information you'll need to ACT. Please help us tonight if you possibly can.

It starts with an email I received today from Fineena:

Our long-time community member Youffraita just found out she is getting evicted TOMORROW (Wednesday 4/22) because her apartment has been condemned. I do not have details -- as you might guess, she's freaking out.

She is located in the Lancaster, PA area. She has a fairly limited amount of belongings, but she can ill afford to lose them all. She thinks she has a place to stash her stuff temporarily, but she has no car. Her place is to be padlocked sometime tomorrow.

If you or someone you know are in the area, have a truck, SUV, or even a large car that could make a few trips, and are available tomorrow to help her move, please respond in the thread and I'll scrape her up off the floor and get her in touch with you.

Many, many thanks!

My Superpower

by The Gimp

Reposted from The Gimp by 2thanks
Making others feel good about themselves is my superpower. I don’t do it consciously - it’s more of a part of who and what I am.

I’m Larime Taylor, and I was born with Arthrogryposis, a condition that leaves me with little use of my arms and legs. I draw with my mouth. I’m a caricature artist and comic book cartoonist (that’s the fancy term for creators who write AND draw their own stories). I've lived in poverty on Social Security for most of the last 14 years, and only after moving to Las Vegas in June on ‘14 have I really had a means of making a living.

Revision is continual: send corrections, additions, mergers, "ceased activity", etc. HERE.
If you use this directory, RECing and republishing will help more kosaks find and use it too.

GROUPS capability was launched in 2011 to rev up local and specialized DK publishing and collective political activism, nationally and beyond. But the GROUPS link (at the top of each page below Daily and Kos) only searches by 4 laborious methods (Most Recent means "most recently created"); so, Where the Kogs Are links all DK local-focus/geographic groups —publish-only and meet-up groups alike (see event notices across the US at Connect! Unite! Act! under navajo's aegis as Community-Building Director of Daily Kos).

After a "General" cateogory comes a list of US states, non-voting-delegate territories/possessions/districts, and regions in one combined alphabet, their groups listed under each by name (e.g., "Motor City Kossacks" is listed as such under Michigan, not as Detroit). If there's no group near you, get to know neighboring groups and make friends. In fact, do that regardless.

REGION-named groups ▬Appalachia ■ Asian/Pacific ■ Caribbean ■ Four Corners ■ Koscadia ■ New England ■ Pacific Northwest ■ Southern ■  Southwestern▬ are only cross-listed with states/locales they cover if their profiles give those details or if the details are kosmailed to mettle fatigue. CANADA, INDIA, MEXICO, and other non-U.S. places with kog groups actually there, are listed last. General/national groups are listed first. As yet, Kossacks on Mars is not an actual geo-group. Words "kossack", "Dailykos", etc., are generally omitted as redundant.

The diary list (posting history) and members access links are information-rich for how recently/often/actively the group publishes, on what concerns, and who the administrators, editors and contributors are. (Where profile or contact is the link, group formation was in-process at last contact with mettle fatigue.) Groups that have no admins can't add or promote members, and if also no editors they can't publish; in effect, those groups have ceased activity but remaining members may still be contactable for forming a new group.

A local-looking name doesn't obligate a group to add members, publish, arrange meet-ups, or answer messages (real life may intervene) and a kosmail-to-group —asking to join it, requesting diary republication, etc.—  doesn't put a New Message alert at the MESSAGES line in anyone's WELCOME BACK box, so it may not be seen timely. Try kosmailing to a currently-active admin or editor (check how recently their individual profile pages show comments or diaries). If that gets no response, and if the group hasn't published in some time (to see pub'g dates, click on "list" at Diaries (list) below the group name at any of its pages), consider contacting active members about starting a new group in the area, and coordinating with&via navajo i.e., get organized together rather than fragment or collide yourselves apart.
