Just got back from the healthcare rally/march in Boston -- here are some pictures.

It was held at the gazebo on the Boston Common -- here are some of the first people we saw:

I'm about to send the email below to Mass. Senate President Therese Murray, who according to the Boston Globe is cool to Kennedy's request that state law be amended to (again) allow gubernatorial appointments for Senate vacancies. And also to my state reps Marty Walz and Anthony Petruccelli, and the Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo.

Dear Senator Petruccelli, Representative Walz, President Murray and Speaker DeLeo:

I was moved to write you after seeing the Globe headline on my walk to work today, about Sen. Kennedy's request.

I urge you to move forward with his suggestion, for the good of the Commonwealth and of the country. I realize it looks bad at first glance, but I and many other Mass. citizens realize this is necessary, and we will have your back.

There's plenty that could be done within left-leaning circles, but I wonder if it would also be worthwhile to make common cause with all the conservatives who are newly alarmed at the new extent of presidential power.

So I got the OK at work to take 9-10 days off for volunteering on the Obama campaign, and I'm trying to decide what the best way to use it would be. I live near Boston.

Option #1 would be all in a single block, the two weeks before the election.

Option #2 would be to only take Fridays and Mondays off, but start earlier in October through the weekend before Election Day, and then also take Election Day off.

Pros and cons under the cut.

So I was as nervous as the rest of the site (or much of it anyway) Friday about the Palin pick, and whether the Obama campaign would be able to respond appropriately.

So I am happy to see that Obama is doing what I think is clearly the best strategy – not attacking her inexperience, just privately rejoicing that "experience" is now off the table and it's a straight "change A vs. change B" election. From Politico:

"I think you guys can take a look at Gov. Palin's record, Joe Biden's record and make your judgment in terms of who you think has what it takes to be an outstanding vice president," Obama said after a rally in Dublin, Ohio. "I feel confident about my choice."

This was about as far as Obama would go, for a second day in a row, to cast a critical eye on Palin.

What's wrong with this reclist?

by Zach Alexander

I'm only a semi-casual Kossack (for example: this is only diary #3), but I distinctly recall seeing the reclist full of "get off your @$$, stop talking about the horse race, and go work the doors and phones!!!" diaries for the early primaries. But I haven't seen that for a long time.

Obama for the win

by Zach Alexander

I've been supporting Barack Obama in the Democratic primary, but I haven't been extremely enthusiastic. Here's why.

If we look at Obama's and Hillary's basic policy ideas, they're not terribly different. The difference in their health policies everyone is talking about, i.e. forcing everyone to join the new plan (Clinton) vs. simply offering a new plan and making it affordable (Obama), is blown out of all proportion. Please, people, let's focus on getting health care for 95 percent of the country before we freak out about that last 5 percent.

But if we look at what kind of people they are, and how they would govern, Obama, for all his faults, looks way better. So much better it's not even funny.

[edit: took out Bush stuff, not strictly relevant.]
