You're angry. (and picky about grammar) You have every right to be.  Rick Warren is a hypocritical asshole.  Do something about it.

Organize a boycott.  Demand impeachment.  Throw your damn shoes at Obama.

That's right.  Violence is about to escalate because 100,000 Sunni's are not going to be paid to not fight.

The Iraqi government plans to cut salaries for the estimated 100,000 members of the Awakening movement whose revolt against Al Qaeda in Iraq played a key role in bringing about the sharp fall in violence in Iraq.

What I find suspicious is the timing.  On the cusp of a anti-war Democrat coming into power, the Iraqi government

The New Keating 5

by altscott

Back in April, the NY Times ran this story about McCain's friend and huge campaign donor John Diamond.  Here is a link to the April New York Times Story.  McCain's actions and relationship with John Diamond are eerily similar to his relationship/friendship with Charles Keating.

During last night's debate, I was floored to hear McCain's promise that his administration would buy mortgages and direct his treasury secretary to 'renegotiate' with the home owners.  This obvious ploy to buy votes would be denounced coming from any Democrat.  Aside from comments on New Republic, I have hardly seen a whisper from 'conservatives'.  Reeking of McDesperation, McCain has sunk to another new low.

President Bush is seeking to affirm that we are still at war and is doing it as sneakily as possible.  I'm wondering what could be his motive beyond the obvious justification of looting the national treasury.

Once upon a time, there was a meme that Bush was going to declare a State of Emergency somewhere around the next two months.  Other than that CT, what are some other reasons?

Reaching Rural Oregon White Voters

by altscott

About ten years ago, my parents moved to rural Eastern Oregon to enjoy their retirement.  They were tired of the fast pace of life in Portland.  Life long Democrats, they were pleasantly surprised to encounter many liberals and left-leaning moderates in their new community.  Yet their sole source of news is the local moderate paper and TV news.  Like many older adults, they don't have any interest in searching the internet for their news.  For them, the internet is for booking airline flights and email.

They are both avid Hillary Clinton supporters because Bill Clinton visited the region.  They are completely unaware of all the real news about Hillary, Barack, and John McCain.  I do my best to send them links to diaries that are better researched and written than their local paper, or even many articles in the Oregonian.

Yeah, I know.  You're thinking she wouldn't be where she is if she wasn't the wife of former President Clinton.  But to be a wife of a President you have to be a woman.

I am tired of Hillary and her team trying again and again to point out that Obama is black.  Bill emphasized it to the white racists in South Carolina.  Ferraro, someone I never thought of as an attention whore, points it out as we head to Southern primaries.

Whatever Hillary's political beliefs, she is a Republican with a Republican attack machine.  And she's losing votes among the few holdouts I know.

On A Daily Show this last week, Jon Stewart said he thinks Edwards dropped out so that Obama could gain enough support to defeat Hillary.  I had been thinking much the same thing since I read that he was leaving the race.

Why Obama and not Hillary?  She seems presidential at times.  She's knowledgeable, worldly, well-connected (not always a good thing), she would probably listen to Bill's advice (I'm not sure that's a good thing lately), but in general she strikes me as someone who could get things done.

I have been thinking that progressives need to prove to America that we are the party that truly "Supports the Troops".  The Republicans have perpetuated a lie that to 'support the troops', you have to support the commander-in-chief (except Clinton in Kosovo) in whatever hair-brained scheme he chooses.  Meanwhile, our brave soldiers are worn out, going on extended (and further extended) tours of duty, with inadequate equipment (lacking body armor and armored vehicles), having their reputations destroyed by mercenary groups slaughtering villagers who probably associate the violence with all Americans.  Then they come home to crappy hospitals, limited or no medical and psychiatric care and now, as I read on here today, no GI Bill for college.  It is a travesty.

Is this a good idea?

My Short Letter to Nancy Pelosi

by altscott

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

Many of us are at a loss at what your becoming the first female Speaker of the House means.  We've waited for over a decade to regain control of Congress and you rode that tide to the Speaker's office.  But what will be your ultimate legacy?  Capitulation.

Top 100 Ways Global Warming Will Change Your Life

As a concrete thinker, I am always on the lookout for someone explaining abstract concepts to me in a way I can easily grasp.  The Center for American progress has done just that.  I recommend you read the complete article but I will post what I think are the most interesting highlights.

This isn't your typical diary because I'm just some guy who doesn't really know anything about the economy and all that.  I've just seen a couple of articles lately that make me worried and I've got questions for the smart people in the room.

First, here is an article about the Saudi's changing interest rates or something.  The article headline says the following:

Fears of dollar collapse as Saudis take fright

I've read the article but don't really get what this could mean for me.
