February 15, 2003, remember? Cold as hell, crystal clear 9/11-type day, but the march was on. We met friends up at Central Park South and 59th (There's Jerry Springer!) and marched over towards First, where the demo was supposed to be. We couldn't believe how crowded it was, jammed on all cross town streets, Third Avenue jammed, Second Avenue closed off, people streaming uptown, uptown, uptown, looking for a street where the cops would let us cross over to First, where the demo was supposed to be. We walked up to 80th Street, and finally over to First. First was jammed, down to 47th where the platform and the speakers were, and we could see up as far up as 86th, jammed.
We were with the nurses, and the CUNY teachers, all jammed in with scattered folks like us, all pissed off and afraid that these crazy bastards were going to go to war. Again.
There were hundreds of thousands of people, probably closer to a million. The Times initially reported "tens of thousands," later called it "more than 300,000." Fox News called us "the usual suspects." (more)
