Hi all! I was over at Nate’s (projects.fivethirtyeight.com/...). I used to know him when he was just a Poblano. : )
Anyhoo, I noticed The Tangelo Taint Tumors approval rating had dipped a bit, and I thought “well he just got some bad numbers from some good pollsters.” And, indeed he had. So, I dived into the Monmouth University numbers because (a) they are public and free, and (b) they are an A+ pollster according to the holy Nate Silver.
What struck me, and might strike you is the ENORMOUS (TEHTRANSCRIPTSNYJBEJYVCJGE*&PERFESTCALLBLAHBLAH) gender gap we have in our little country. American women give the Dumpster fire a much deserved -27 approval rating. While men (what the hell is wrong with us?) give the adderall-addled, hamberder-muncher an unbelieveable +9 approval. So, let’s break out the calculator, that’s a, hmmm . . . 36 point gender gap! Holy crap!
Apparently the air on Mars makes you TEH STUPID or something. But seriously, what are the societal implications of this? Well, I would guess the swelling ranks of “incel” morons would be one. But, really, this is not a small rift—I mean it’s not a Mary Matalin/James Carville kind of gap. And, a lot of these people must be married, seeing each other, or friends with benefits. So when and where does the dam break? When do American women say “yeah I like your rugged self-reliance, and your DiCaprio looks, but this is a problem?”
It was said in quainter times that women were a great “civilizing influence.” Is it possible that women are a lagging indicator? Can we turn this around? I mean, can they turn this around? I hope so.
Finally, we talk about red state/ blue state divides a lot, but the gap between American men and women is close to the gap between Wyoming and Vermont. And, for me, the implications are fascinating. Interested in hearing your thoughts. Cheers! -M
