Long ago, in a place far away from instant communications and jet travel, states were enclaves of people who left the old place because they didn't like the laws or power structure, and set up their local government in a fashion of their own design, intending for it to reflect their customs and practices.
With the ever increasing instances of interface between people from different states, the federal government has become more involved in making sure that folks from one state feel comfortable in other states by constraining the individuality of those law sets. States have largely lost any distinguishing legal features.
Is it time to do away with state laws, and adopt a single legal code for the entire nation including territories?
Is it time to do away with state borders entirely, and become one large nation/state?
