The latest execution in Arizona has apparently gone real bad.

Lawyers filed emergency papers to stop the execution of Joseph Wood in Arizona on Wednesday, saying prison officials botched the lethal injection.

"He has been gasping and snorting for more than an hour," according to the motion filed in federal district court in Arizona. "He is still alive."

Wood, 55, was convicted of killing his girlfriend and her father in 1989.

Update: NBC has more info. Apparently it took the prisoner two hours to die.

Remember Oklahoma City

by briefer

With all of the news coming out of the Boston area this morning, it would be easy to miss an important anniversary today. I live in Oklahoma. One thing I noticed this morning on my Facebook feed is that there is very little chatter about the breaking news in Boston, but very many "memorials" about that terrible day in 1995 when Timothy McVeigh also used violence to make a political point.

168 dead, including 19 children. If you've never been to the Oklahoma City Memorial, it is a beautiful, horrible, and pensive place to be. You should visit sometime. The Museum brings it all back home.

I suppose all of us Okies, who were here and aware at the time of the bombing, still have a little PTSD about it. We certainly cannot compare our reaction to the citizens of New York City on their terrible day, but we certainly can relate. Also, the people of Boston and Massachusetts have the right to their own reaction, that we can't claim to totally understand. But, again, we can relate.

The main lesson here: whether right wing, or left wing, Christian or Muslim, or...Political Violence is not to be taken lightly. Keep the people of Boston in your thoughts and prayers today. But don't forget NYC or OKC.

MSNBC  has a banner headline up: "BREAKING NEWS: Republican Sen. McConnell says there is agreement on tax rates."

There's not even a story to click through to at this time. Don't know what this means. Just a weather advisory.

Edit: NRO has a story up saying McConnell has said "pass the tax rate portion now."

From NRO [I'm quoting NRO!!!!]:

But first, he’d like the Senate to vote on the tax aspect of the deal as soon as possible. “I can report we’ve reached an agreement on all of the tax issues,” he said. “Let’s pass the tax relief portion now.”
Now, CNN has this.

Some tweets:

Well folks it's over. The master has spoken and I really feel like it's time to simply power down the DailyKos servers and just start selling T-shirts on what's left of the beach.

Dick Morris has come down from Prognostication Mountain and declared that... Wait for this... "Here comes the landslide." It looks like it's going to be a barnburner for Mr. Romney. Here's how Professor Morris sees the Swing States:

Then, in October, Obama lost the Southern swing states of Florida (29) and Virginia (13). He also lost Colorado (10), bringing his total to 255 votes.

And now, he faces the erosion of the northern swing states: Ohio (18), New Hampshire (4) and Iowa (6). Only in the union-anchored state of Nevada (9) does Obama still cling to a lead.

In the next few days, the battle will move to Pennsylvania (20), Michigan (15), Wisconsin (10) and Minnesota (16). Ahead in Pennsylvania, tied in Michigan and Wisconsin, and slightly behind in Minnesota, these new swing states look to be the battleground.

Or will the Romney momentum grow and wash into formerly safe Democratic territory in New Jersey and Oregon?

Possibly more disturbing is the Masters decree about the Senate. After going through a long and erudite analysis of the various races (he does "accurately" say that the Brown/Warren fight is "tied"), he gives us the real bad news:
The most likely outcome? Eight GOP takeaways and two giveaways for a net gain of six. A 53-47 Senate, just like we have now, only opposite.

Barack Obama’s parting gift to the Democratic Party.

You just really have to read the whole article to get the full intellectual flavor of the analysis.

I even marvel at his sensitivity and choice of words. For example, when speaking about New Jersey, here's what he has to say:

Or will the Romney momentum grow and wash into formerly safe Democratic territory in New Jersey ...
I am most certain that the citizens of New Jersey would welcome Romney "washing" into their state right now.

Again, I just feel defeated and disheartened. I know how everyone else feels about Dick Morris around here and how his predictions are treasured. But, as the recent events on the coast have taught us, let us persevere. Maybe, after two terms of Pres. Romney, we can come back in 2020 and be able to hold our head up high.

Until next time.

As we all know, Donald Trump has made a deal with imaginary Pres. Obama, offering to give $5 million to Pres. Obama's favorite charity if the president would kindly release all of his school records and a copy of his last proctology exam. Obviously, the president is seriously considering this.

However, in light of the hurricane, and the current national emergency, the Donald has graciously extended the jump through a hoop deadline that he imposed on the leader of the free world – because there is a hurricane out and about and people are dying.

As politico said:

Because of the devastating hurricane, the mogul tweeted Tuesday that he is extending his offer to President Barack Obama to donate $5 million to charity if the president produces his college records and passport application.
It is hard to see how the Donald could be more gracious or more giving. Here is the new offer in all of its glory.

Apparently, the leader of the free world now has until 12 PM on Thursday to comply with Donald's ransom note.

Please rejoice with me.

And let it be remembered forever that this man was the leading contender for the Republican nomination for several weeks. Let them stew in it.

The Trump 'bombshell' (?)

by briefer

I got no clue if this is true or not but there is word out and about that the Trump Bombshell is that at one point in their marriage the Obama's were considering getting a divorce.

If that is the case, it appears that Obama can likely sew up the huge "in 20 years of marriage there have been times when we have had problems" voting block.

In fact, I would think that Newt Gingrich, and two thirds of the current Republican Party, would have to vote for Obama… If this were true.

Or, it could all just be another layer of sleaze preceding the sleaze that Donald Trump was actually going to reveal. Who knows. Details (?) and a link below the squiggly.

I know this is "out there," and well known, but it's a document you might keep handy for the upcoming.

In 2008 the McCain campaign produced an "oppo research" document (warning - pdf), which is 200 pages of history, summary, and attack points aimed at Willard Romney.

For example, here's just a small piece from the Bain section, from pgs. 135-6:

Romney Ran Day-To-Day Operations At Bain Capital From Its Inception In 1984 Through Early 1999, When He Left To Assume Control Of The Salt Lake Winter Games. “When Mr. Romney finally set up shop just across the hall from Bain consulting in 1984, his initial plan centered on providing venture capital – seed money – for ideas spun off by Bain consultants. … By the time Mr. Romney left the firm in 1999, the investments it had sold off had made enough money to deliver an average annual return that amounted to as much as 100 percent before fees, several of its investors said.” (David Kirkpatrick, “Romney Political Fortunes Tied To Riches He Gained In Business,” The New
York Times, 6/4/07)

Romney Served As CEO Of Bain Capital Through August 2001, Even Though He No Longer Ran Daily Operations. “Although he gave up running day-to-day operations at the venture capital firm in order to head the Salt Lake Winter Olympics, he remained CEO and held his financial interest in the company through August 2001.” (Stephanie Ebbert and Yvonne Abraham, “Camps Spar Over Romney Word Choice,” The Boston Globe, 10/31/02)

Bain Capital Is “Remains Romney’s Creation” As Over Three-Quarters Of Its Partners Came On Board During Romney’s Tenure, Joining The “Corporate Culture … He Nurtured Over 17 Years.” “Bain Capital remains Romney’s creation. The corporate culture is one he nurtured over 17 years. A Herald analysis of the firm’s leadership shows that more than three quarters of the managing partners joined when he was the boss.”
(Brett Arends, “American Workers’ Bane,” Boston Herald, 6/22/05)

Romney: “I’m Basically In The Investors’ Hall Of Fame.” (John McElhenny, “Romney, O’Brien Spar At Gubernatorial Debate,” The Associated Press, 10/25/02)

Pg. 135 to 167 outline details of many of the disastrous Bain/Romney vulture capitalist activities. Lost jobs. Looted pensions. Jobs shipped overseas. You know the drill.

As we are seeing, this base information, collected by McCain, is merely the first few threads in what is becoming the unraveling of the Romney candidacy.

Maybe it was best that he picked Sarah.

Read and enjoy.
