This is a Democratic blog, a partisan blog. One that recognizes that Democrats run from left to right on the ideological spectrum, and yet we're all still in this fight together. We happily embrace centrists like NDN's Simon Rosenberg and Howard Dean, conservatives like Martin Frost and Brad Carson, and liberals like John Kerry and Barack Obama. Liberal? Yeah, we're around here and we're proud. But it's not a liberal blog. It's a Democratic blog with one goal in mind: electoral victory. And since we haven't gotten any of that from the current crew, we're one more thing: A REFORM BLOG. The battle for the party is not an ideological battle. It's one between establishment and anti-establishment factions. And as I've said a million times, the status quo is untenable
Health Advisory! Though this diary is in praise of President Obama, some Obama supporters may experience heightened blood pressure upon reading. Proceed at your own risk!
Two years ago a relatively young man left the Senate after less than one full term to become President of the United States. His resume as an elected politician before becoming a the junior Senator from Illinois was comprised of only seven years as a state Senator. Charismatic and idealistic he was, but overriding all of the inexperience and the naivete that undeniably accompanied his relative youth and lack of tempering in national office was a deep political pragmatism. With one notable and ultimately harmful exception.
He believed that 21st century Republicans could be reasoned with and worked with, that 21st century Republicans, despite all of the mountain of evidence to the contrary, were reasonable people who would at the end of the day do what was right for America. Rather than what was right for the Republicans and their Corporate masters. He was, as recent history emphasizes to an extreme an ineluctable degree, wrong.
Republicans are vicious thugs who will do literally anything to get and keep power.
Power that they then use to screw Americans and enrich the elite.
They will kill the economy for the rest of us, for the rest of the world, so that they can grow richer. They will kill every safety net the American People have. They will start wars of aggression and kill hundreds of thousands of innocents to get what they want. They will torture to get what they want. They will subvert the Department of Justice to get what they want. They will pursue political prosecutions to get what they want, and they will steal elections to get what they want. They will impeach Presidents to get what they want.
First of all, do NOT change the name to something "nicer."
I've got bad news for you folks, there will be no Mission Accomplished in the Class War. There will be no great and glorious victory with flags waving above the battlements.
Class war is not about defeating the Rich, it is about scaring the hell out of them enough so that they give up power.
The Ruling Class (and don't worry we are NOT talking about YOU) only grudgingly accepted the New Deal because the idea of a true Class War, an all out uprising of the poor, the unemployed, foreclosed upon farmers, destitute Veterans, and yes....Leftist Agitators ...scared the hell out of them.
Facing a changing demographic and a population slightly more educated about Republican fear campaigns has forced the GOP to try to go "over the top" on fear mongering.
It is now apparently the mainstream Republican position that it was NOT .... NOT ....19 fanatics guided by Osama Bin Laden and Khalid Sheik Mohammed who flew planes into to World Trade center....but all of Islam.
Every single Muslim in the world attacked New York on September 11th.
Half of the eligible voters in America do not vote.
More than half of America does not vote in Mid Terms.
Not voting does not equal a protest, it equals fading into the wall paper and allowing others to decide your fate....and the fate of the poor....and the fate of Iraqis and Afghans....and now the fate of the planet itself.
It does NOT register as a protest to The Powers That Be.
It registers a victory for The Powers That Be.
The less The People participate in the one way we have left to us to alter or at least affect the world, the more the The Powers That Be rub their hands together in glee.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The humanitarian and economic disaster caused by the worst floods in Pakistan's history could spark political unrest that could destabilize the government, dealing a major blow to the Obama administration's efforts to fight violent Islamic extremism.
The government's shambling response to floods that have affected a third of the country has some analysts saying that President Asif Ali Zardari could be forced from office, possibly by the military, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half its 63-year history.
Other experts caution that the state itself could collapse, as hunger and destitution trigger explosions of popular anger that was already seething over massive unemployment, high fuel prices, widespread power outages, corruption, and a bloody insurgency by extremists allied with al Qaida.
Thank you for all you have accomplished in your time in office. I sincerely appreciate all of the many ways you are different than George Bush. Your wife and children are beautiful and vivacious and a pleasure to watch and in Michelle's case, listen to. And by the way, that tie really brings out the color of your eyes, and the salt and pepper hair thing is looking pretty darn good on you!
Thank you for protecting us from Canadian health care and those that would close the pentagon. I am heartened to see that you are keeping your elbow tucked in when you elevate for the three-pointer. Bo looks like he is growing up nicely and you must be feeding him well, you can see it in the sheen on his coat.
Who needs brunch? No, you kids go on without me. I'll be fine. I'll just sit here in this cold dark universe huddled around my little sun while you go have a good time. Don't worry about your poor old mother. Why start now?
America's Financial Elite are immoral and avaricious. Willing to kill people rather than pay for them to be healed, willing to throw people out of their homes as they bet against, and thus effect, the economy that puts the food on our tables for our children to eat.
Today, the usually erudite Yves Smith, publisher of Naked Capitalism, provides us with a guest post from Steve, over at the Daily Bail, who tells Cat Food Commission Co-Chairs Bowles and Simpson, as ...
