I have a theory about the stimulus package. Obama is playing the media, Obama is playing the Democrats, and Obama is playing the Republicans. In the end, we'll get a progressive stimulus package but it's going to take some sneaky political maneuvering to get there.
Follow me after the lead and I'll explain.
Dear John Aravosis (and others),
I have read Americablog for years. I appreciate your enthusiasm and all the work you’ve done to advance the liberal blogosphere and liberal causes in general. From StopDrLaura to the Jeff Gannon controversy, you’ve made a real impact!
But, I totally disagree with the way you are handling the "Rick Warren Controversy."
I've read so many over-the-top comments here the last 24 hours that it is driving me nuts!
Rick Warren is NOT "swearing Obama in." (The chief justice does that!)
Rick Warren will not be "touting homophobic views to a national audience."
Rick Warren will not be "invocating hate."
Rick Warren will NOY be "setting Obama's agenda."
Rick Warren will be saying a damned little opening prayer to God that our new leader is successful and can help us overcome our problems.
[I prefer no prayer or religion at all. But that likely won't ever change.]
While we have the right to be mad, angry, sad, pissed, numb, etc about the Warren pick, there is something we are overlooking:
Rick Warren is not the only person appearing at the inauguration. There IS a counter-balance and a VERY strong one!

The right wing talking point lately that Obama is a socialist who intends to "spread the wealth around" has really ticked me off!
I'm sick of the right wing talking points. I'm sick of scare tactics. Instead of having conversations about the pros and cons of economic policy, they just throw out scare phrases: "socialist" "raise taxes", etc. Do they really think we're THAT stupid?
I won't go into the fact that THEY have created the largest deficit in US history. I won't go into the fact that THEY have socialized Wall Street and the national banking system. Robbing the poor to save the rich.
But what I WILL go into is why Americans need to stop buying into the scare phrases like "socialist" and realize that they've been allowing rich people to get filthy stinking rich by breaking OUR backs!
Last night John McCain introduced us to "Joe the Plumber" and mentioned his names numerous times throughout the debate. But if Joe The Plumber is going to be McCain’s main argument against Obama’s economic plans, shouldn’t we know more about him? And by more, I mean an actual vetting that the media seems incapable of performing.
Politico reported that his full name is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher. Kos today reported that he was registered as a Natural Law party member and had was NOT an undecided voter, as McCain touted. We heard him on Fox touting socialism aimed at Obama.
But what else? Did you know he has ties to Arizona? Failed to pay taxes? And loves to evict folks?
Just read this on the Huffington Post: Priceless!
On Wednesday morning, John McCain's campaign released a list of 100 former ambassadors endorsing the GOP presidential nominee.
Second on the list, though her name is misspelled, is Leonore Annenberg, currently the president and chairman of the Annenberg Foundation and widow of ambassador and philanthropist Walter Annenberg. Ms. Annenberg was herself the "chief of protocol" at the State Department under President Reagan.
If the last name sounds familiar, it's because it also graces the name of the Chicago education board where Barack Obama and William Ayers sat in the room six times together.
How about a bit of humor?
In honor of David Letterman (who did a pretty damned good job at ruining McCain's noble [cough cough] "campaign suspension"), here's my Top Ten Diary Themes on the Daily Kos Reccomended List
I just read on Americablog that Sarah Palin did nothing today when someone from her crowd called for Obama's death:
"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.
"Boooo!" said the crowd.
"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.
"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.
"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.
Palin went on to say that "Obama held one of the first meetings of his political career in Bill Ayers's living room, and they've worked together on various projects in Chicago."
I normally wouldn’t beg for recommendations, but I think we need to pounce on this opportunity to prove that John McCain is a Washington Insider and his "tough talk" on earmarks is nothing but EMPTY RHETORIC!
We all remember John McCain’s angry pledge during his convention speech: he promised to veto the first bill on his desk that included pork barrel spending. He told us he’d teach them a lesson and "make famous" the politician who had the nerve to ask for an earmark. The crowd roared.
John McCain is obsessed with earmarks. He lures voters in on this issue because he can throw phrases like "pork barrel spending" at it and make people agitated that the government is "wasting" their money.
But we can take this hot button issue of earmarks away from him if we put this in terms that Average Americans can understand.
My two-point strategy below the fold:
You know, we hear tons of stuff about McCain's anger....but, what about some actual stories? We've all heard about McCain calling Cindy a "cunt," how he held his breath as a stubborn 2 year old, and calling opponents shitheads, assholes and "fucking jerks."
But surely some of US have heard insider stories about McCain's temper? Surely there are some former staffers willing to come forward??
I'll share one I've heard after the fold...
