Man with a gun? Call 911. (updated)

by claude

Short and sweet.

Silence is complicity,  so if you have a problem with guns being displayed in public, call the police when you see it happening.

I await the many comments explaining why this is a simple-minded and sophomoric action to take that Very Serious People should ignore.

Fits nicely onto a bumpersticker,  too.

Seeking info.  I have been offered a new Chromebook of my choice, so I am studying up on what this thingie is.

I get it about Linux and open-source,  and I understand the cloud concept of storing software  and data in the ether rather than in my machine,  and grabbing what I need when I need it.  I have read what Wiki has to say about these devices.

But I need some input from folks who are actually using  such a device and how that is working out for you in real life.

Do I need to pay anything to use the Cloud, other than just having my own ISP?  Info about which specific machine to get would be appreciated.

I live very rural, so I hook to the net via copper  that is fed by fiberoptics to within about 2 thousand feet of my home.  I get about 1.5 Mbps speed, which is fast for around here and just about free to boot, thanks to my local phone coop.  I almost never use a computer away from home.  No need to.  My internet service is pretty damn reliable, considering how far out in the boonies I am.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can offer.

New Mexico Kossaks Meet.

by claude

A contingent of New Mexico-based Kogs met Sunday in Albuquerque at Kelly's Brew Pub.  Housed in a renovated auto dealership building dating back to the early days of the Mother Road (Route 66), Kelly's  provided a quiet corner for far-flung Kogs to meet fresh faces and renew old friendships.

NM Kossaks meet up 7/28/2013
Clockwise around the table from the upper right sit New Mexico Kossaks samdobbermann,  Land of Enchantment, Dallasdoc, congentialefty, native, honorary Kossak native's brother Randy in from Montreal, flitedocnm, claude and jainm.  jnhobbs took the photo.

Not a bad showing for one week's notice and the distances involved. Minutes of this meeting are classified.

The Frog Who Crushed The Planet

by claude

Did a French Yuppie really create the Finance Crisis?

You just knew it had to be one of those brie-biting, Sartre-spewing, overly-garlicked Frenchmen who pushed the Earth's finance system over a cliff.

(With written permission to post this article here in its entirety, I give you Greg Palast's  biting wit and investigative journalism:)

This week, US prosecutors finally began the trial of the only person on the entire planet whom they have charged with the financial crimes that sank worldwide stock markets by trillions in 2008 and left millions homeless and jobless, from Detroit to Manchester.

Amazingly, say prosecutors, it all came down to a single Frenchman, Fabrice "Fabulous Fab" Tourre, only 29 years old at the time. Even Julius Caesar waited until he turned 51 to bring the known world to its knees.

Here's the story which his defence team does not dispute:

New Mexico Kossaks meet up Sunday!

by claude

UPDATE:  continued from yesterday

I am calling out a time and place to meet,  as we discussed.  40 Kossaks are on our NM list, more than doubling the roll after my diaries on Saturday and Sunday,  although some live too far to get to ABQ easily.

So here it is, returning to the site of the first NMKos meeting at least five years ago:

Kelly's Brew Pub
3222 Central SE
Albuquerque, New Mexico

(SW corner of Central and Wellesley, between Girard and Carlisle,  4 blocks east of the UNM campus)

2 pm Sunday, July 28, 2013.

Please RSVP promptly by comment here so we can tell Kelly's how many there will be.  Kelly's does booze and "American" eats.  I called for indoor seating because it will be bright and hot and sunny and squinty outside.

Afternoon, because some of us will be coming in from over 100 miles away and I try not to drive at night these days.

Attending:

claude
Dallasdoc  (confirmed)
Land of Enchantment  (confirmed)
jnhobbs (confirmed)
Wendy's Wink (strong maybe)
jan4insight (strong maybe)
emobile (confirmed)
fbihop (confirmed)
divineorder (confirmed)
Jakkalbessie (confirmed)
congenitalefty (confirmed)
native (confirmed)
samddobermann (strong maybe)
jainm (confirmed)

Hope to see you all there.  I'll keep updating this RSVP list.

"Trusted" User question

by claude

Would you trust a user who has posted 9 comments in the 20 months of their membership, 7 of which received mojo, has rated 12 comments, and who has posted no diaries?

Somehow I don't think "trusted user" means what it used to mean.

NO, I am not going to mention any names.  I'm just asking.  I was pretty surprised, myself.

group messaging question?

by claude

Is there a way for all members of a group to receive a message?  Is there something on the group page I am missing that lets a group admin (or other) send out a group message?

Thanks for any help on this

Calling out to New Mexico Kossaks

by claude

UPDATE 2

We have doubled the membership list of NMKossaks!  And more keep coming.  Tomorrow I shall propose a venue for the Albuquerque area.

Thanks all.

UPDATE:  I'm re-posting this in order to get enough eyes.  I realize that not everyone checks into DKos 6 times a day like I do sometimes. Thank you if you have already responded, and if you happen to see someone who might appear to be from NM wandering around out there in the forum mosh pit, give them a heads-up to join in.

Calling all New Mexico Kossaks!  It has been years since we all had a meet-up, despite our organization being one of the earliest of the State-level Kossak   groups.  There has been a NMKos list serve group for nearly ten years, and NM Kossaks have met up in places as diverse as Land of Enchantment's house, a brew-pub in Santa Fe and another in Albuquerque.

New Mexico Kossaks face a daunting task to gather together, as New Mexico is BIG  and mostly empty, with just a few "urban" environments and half of the 2 million people who call it home are scattered all over the landscape.  So it takes a real effort to gather us all together.

We don't even know how many of us there are.  There are many faces long gone who used to be active Kossaks in NM,  and there seem to be many new faces from NM we haven't connected with,  who don't even know there is a NMKos community to connect to.  Right now there are 18 NMKos members;  we had more on our list 8 years ago.  Where are landshark, ellisande, wonmug, and many others we used to see?

AFAIK, I am the first NMKossak, and I did organize the earliest gatherings. Kossak lgmcp has steadfastly maintained the NMKos list serve,  and I started a NM Kossaks group when the DK4 changeover occurred,  but I haven't done anything with it.

I'd like us all to gather up one time this summer,  time and place to be decided by the consensus of who responds to this call.

I am going to take advantage of Navajo's energy in promoting local Kos meetings everywhere and hope we can gather in all the NM Kossaks in one place, starting with here on line and hopefully somewhere in our beautiful state.  Any Kossak who resides in New Mexico, or has roots/interests there,  is welcome to join the NM Kossaks group,  (link)  which gets us all in communication using established Daily Kos channels.  Expect a barrage of "Calling NMKossaks"  diaries so we catch the folks who only show up every few days and may miss notice.

Albuquerque is the densest population zone, with a large metro area, and doubtless the majority of NMKossaks are going to be close.  That's "only" 125 miles away from me, and some Kossaks are twice that far from ABQ, so that's a real consideration.

If nothing else,  let's at least get a headcount  and a shout out. If you are not already signed up to the NMKossak group, request entrance via Kos Message to meand we'll get you signed in.

Thanks for reading. Hope to hear from you.
