I wrote the following Letter to the Editor yesterday and sent it to three different Idaho newspapers. The idea to put it up in a diary came as I read the APR this morning and came to Andrea Miller’s piece from the “Nation.” The portion of the article that caught my eye was :
“What we are learning—led by activists and advocates who are fighting the attacks on the front lines—is that we are more effective when we publicly proclaim our support for abortion access for all and stand strong to defend that position when the ugly and deceitful attacks come. Hiding or apologizing for our support for abortion access will not prevent the attacks, and only contributes to abortion stigma.”
The marches and protests that have happened since Trump took office have had an impact. They have not only unified the left but have caused independents and reasonable Republicans to look more favorably at progressive positions. Being disabled, I no longer go to protests but I will do what I can from my keyboard. I will spread the progressive word in dark red Idaho where I can and hope it finds some who are receptive. If nothing else I will proclaim with pride my resistance to authoritarianism and my support of small d democracy. We all need to do what we can.
LTE— We Deserve a Trial, Not a Rubber Stamp
A trial without witnesses and documents is a show trial. I’m very disappointed that my Senators are participating in such a farce. We may as well be in Russia or any other country that pretends to be some form of democracy yet is always bowing to the person or party in charge.
The idea that Republicans are serving their country instead of their party is dashed when they refuse to have an honest evaluation of the President’s actions he was impeached for in a trial that presents all the available material available in the form of witness testimony and documents the people need to evaluate those actions.
This country has been through dark periods including slavery and McCarthyism, and this is another. The party line votes prove partisanship rules and the party with the most votes will protect its interests above the country’s need for honest representation.
