This may or may not be a crazy idea.
Why bother to go through the pomp and circumstances of having Nancy Pelosi lose in a vote to Dennis Hastert.
Lets say we realize the democrats will not choose the speaker. But we want a speaker who believes in the principles of not changing long-held rules to protect politicians. So the entire democratic delegation will be supporting Chris Shays because of his willingness to speak out against the DeLay rule which Hastert supported.
As of last count there are I believe 40 gop members who have said they also supported shays stand on the DeLay measure. They would obviously be the people to target as swing votes.
Worst case scenerio, Hastert is still the speaker, the DeLay rule gets talked about for a month, and the democratic party gets positive press for finding a way to work across party lines.
Any thoughts.
