We're a nation of wimps. That's what this whole Darren Wilson shooting has come down to. People can discuss all day about whether or not Michael Brown attacked Darren Wilson. There's conflicting witnesses so we aren't sure what happened. But let's just pretend that the conservatives are right on this one. That Darren Wilson was attacked without provocation by Michael Brown, who thought he was about to be arrested for stealing cigars, which led to Darren Wilson shooting him.
This is the question that I've been asking Darren Wilson supporters when they give that version of events:
They say it's not nice to generalize, but when EVERY single encounter I've had with people who make arguments against Michael Brown are making bullshit racist statements, then I can say from my own experience that yes, if they're defending the shooting of an unarmed man six fucking times, then they probably don't care too much for black people.
Below the fold is every argument I've heard from a Michael Brown detractor, and it's not pretty:
"Socialized health care" is on its way. The "socialist agenda" is taking over America. And best of all, Barack Obama, a "committed socialist ideologue," is in the Oval Office.
But Wharton, co-chair of the Socialist Party USA, sees no reason to celebrate. He's seen people with bumper stickers and placards that call Obama a socialist, and he has a message for them: Obama isn't a socialist. He's not even a liberal.
"We didn't see a great victory with the election of Barack Obama," Wharton says, " and we certainly didn't see our agenda move from the streets to the White House."
The Socialist party doesn't like Obama? You don't say!
As most of you can tell from the rec list, teacherken has won the 2010 Agnes Meyer Award for excellence in teaching.
Teacherken is one of my favorite writers on Daily Kos. He's one of the few people who was here before I joined in 2004 that still regularly writes and makes the rec list. His ability to deal with high school students has been a big help in his writing, as he's always been able to keep a collective cool about him even when the rest of the blog was insane with emotion.
So it's because of this that I write to give teacherken a heartfelt congratulations that's a little too long for the comments.
You earned the award, teacherken. Congratulations.
We have some excellent Christmas music for those of you who are just plain tired of the same old crap playing on your radio every year. There's no light or easy listening music here (except maybe a little emo), just some good ol' American punk rock tunes to help you with this holiday season.
First up, everyone's favorite punk rock group, The Ramones:
If you've ever spent any time debating right-wingers on the issue of health care (or Social Security, Medicare, or-in my case-the Air Force), you will likely come across a "tenther". This post is to provide a logical refutation of the tenther movement philosophies using previous court cases interpreting the US Constitution.
My mom isn't a liberal in the slightest. During the Bush years, I argued with her constantly about the need to get out of Iraq, Bush's screwing over of veterans, and the evils of privatizing Social Security. Sometimes we've argued so badly that we would even stop speaking to each other for a few days. Despite all that, I probably owe her more than anything for my interest in politics. Nothing makes you dig your heels in and become an activist more than motivated opposition:).
So it's been a big (and welcome) surprise that my mom has become active in her support for universal health care. After dealing with the horrors of Blue Cross Blue Shield for years, she wants to be able to buy into a public option. She's convinced that the government can provide lower cost, higher quality care than the bastards that just raised her insurance premiums.
She recently wrote The White House and after doing so, I asked for her permission to post the following letter to Blogging For Michigan and Daily Kos. Here it is, in its entirety (name redacted and bold emphasis is mine):
Look, it should be obvious to all that conservatives hate America. The teabagging, hateful idiots that protest have proven it.
First of all, look at the flag they've been waving around at their protests. Not only have they decided to desecrate the American flag, but this has been wholeheartedly condoned by the leaders of the conservative movement (i.e., Beck and Limbaugh).
Yes, I know this diary is short, but word needs to get out nonetheless.
On Saturday, August 22, Congressman Sander Levin (MI-12) is being protested by the Teabaggers. Rep. Levin hasn't had any town hall meetings (gee, I wonder why), so the teabaggers got their marching orders to go out to see him.
The protest is from 12-2 p.m. at 27085 Gratiot Ave, in Roseville, MI.
So far the protests have been pitiful failures launched by the Repug party. At the Gary Peters (MI-9) protest, there were enough counter-protestors to drown out the voices of the teabag brigade. At the Mark Schauer (MI-7) protest, the counter-protesters came out in such large numbers that what was supposed to be an anti-health care protest turned into a pro-health care rally.
We need to stop them once again, this time at Saturday from 12-2 in Roseville. Please, please, make the trip!
