I don’t write to my Congressman often, but today I felt compelled. The only way to keep the pressure up is to take action. Here is what I wrote and I thought I would put it out there for others to copy and/or modify.
Dear Congressman Meehan:
I am writing to you about Donald Trump. As a member of Congress your first duty is to the country, not your party, and not even to the constituents that elected you. Although it has been clear for several months that Donald Trump is not fit to be President, it has become crystal clear over this past week. He is an individual that cannot take any criticism or even understand how to respond to it. Instead he takes personal shots at a military family who lost their son defending this country and questions their patriotism. Although some members of Congress have made statements about Donald Trump I have not seen anything from you or your office. It is time! It is time to finally take a stand against bigotry, strong man tactics, xenophobia, and sexism. I could go on, but I know that you know he is not a good person. Donald Trump's praise of Putin is beyond comprehension for someone running for President of this great country. Have you ever seen a candidate running for office, let alone President, that praises an autocratic leader for their leadership style? I doubt you can, or if it has occurred, I would assume we would be ashamed of it as a country.
This country has faced a man like Donald Trump before. Senator McCarthy besmirched the reputations of hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals and it took the courage of a few individuals to finally stand up to him to stop the insanity. You are elected from a moderate district so I am confused about why you refuse to take a stand against such an individual. I am sure as a former prosecutor you know what you are seeing and hearing is not right, and if Donald Trump had any other party affiliation you would be out there condemning his actions without any reservations or qualifications. It is time to take a stand against Donald Trump and it is time to take a stand on behalf of our country.
