As David Nir reported in today's DK Elections Morning Digest, Maine's congressional redistricting process will be going to the Legislature for a vote near the end of this month. Historically, we pass these plans with a two-thirds majority; failing that, it goes to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court to decide.

Republicans can bypass this requirement and pass their plan with a simple majority because it is presently set in statute, not the Maine Constitution. But that could possibly set up an interesting showdown...

The Grassroots Way to Donate

by Eddie in ME

After reading Gilas Goat Boy's diary today, I had a moment reading the comments. There were lots of comments about not donating to the DNC, because people feel they don't do a good job with your money. For the most part, I agree with this. Now, most of us are people with only a few bucks to spare... how to spend it?

Not much of a diary, but since it was in the Elections diary on the FP, I may as well post something that actually qualifies as "BREAKING!"

Cynthia Dill won the State Senate District 7 race today -- by a vote total of 5,056 to 2,405.

This is of interest largely because six months ago, this same race went to a recount which was won by her predecessor, Democrat Lawrence Bliss, by about fifty votes once the recount was over.

I'd like to note that Cynthia is one of those Democrats who, you know, actually sounds like a Democrat. She pushed a bill that would allow us to recall elected officials (like our irritating governor). And she won 68%-32%. Proof that, once again, Democrats who actually act like Democrats win.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a shot across the bow at our State Legislature and Governor LePage -- keep acting foolish, and this will happen to you all in 2012. The Republicans barely lost this seat last time -- this time, they got shelled. Have a nice day, GOP.

Stigma is unacceptable.

by Eddie in ME

I don't have much of a diary, I'll admit. Yay for DK4 I guess, I can get away with that. I want more than a comment, and I want others to do the same too. To be honest, my goal is to have the rec list filled with diaries about this very same subject, so the message is made loud and clear.

I am about to graduate in May with an Associates in Applied Science in Mental Health. We talk about stigma in every class and have for the time I've been in the program. I'll be transferring to another school where I will be working on my Bachelors (and later Masters) in Social Work. This stuff is too important to ignore.

Markos, people with pervasive mental illness are the most stigmatized group in America. Telling someone who states offense with your use of the term "schizophrenia" as a pejorative to "take their meds" is absolutely unacceptable. There are probably thousands of people who are members of your blog who have mental illnesses just based on the statistics.

Pick a new line to belittle people with. "Take your meds" is unacceptable. If I ever see you do that crap again, I'm out of here.

I've been reading these diaries on Feeding America, a series which is now apparently at its end -- and I decided to keep it going a few hours longer, if anyone cares to humor me. Because there's still time before Thanksgiving.

And because hunger sucks. It really, really sucks. I'm going to ramble a bit, as when I tell old history, I tend to ramble. You can also opt to just donate, and skip the diary. I don't really care. But if you need the Sally Struthers pitch -- for just 70 cents a day, you can make a difference! -- read on. I'm sorry if my story isn't tragic enough, but it is kind of amusing.

A few words on Maine

by Eddie in ME

I don't care if I'm troll rated to hell and back. I'm saying what I have to say, and that's the end of it. Take it or leave it.

No slow news week here. A very successful raid, an amusing political tale, but also some really yucky news too. Much more good than bad below the fold.

A slow news week, so sorry to that HRed schmuck from last week, but my community diary will be short on subject. It's time for the tabard vote.

As discussed, this diary is now appearing on Tuesdays, since the server is down anyway. No one seemed to hate the idea, so here we are! A little movement in the guild achievement rankings, and some hope for progression this week. Below the fold...

We're showing Garrosh that we socialists are not to be trifled with. Our way of doing things is leading to a swift progression. I'm playing with a different format for the diary, keeping different things separate. We'll see how that goes. Offers a little bit of an ability to skip the TL;DR parts and go straight to what you wanna see.
