Fairly short diary, but an interesting bit of history.

This link is to the text to the  Militia Act of 1792, in which Congress sets forth a requirement for citizens to purchase goods from a private company.

I note this purely to mark an argument that can possibly be used to counter claims that the HCR is unconstitutional on the grounds that it requires citizens to purchase goods or service.

The relevant text after the jump.

Live in MN?

by edgeways

This is going to be too short to be considered a normal diary... I apologize.

However I think it viable enough to warrant something more than a buried comment.

If you live in MN and wish to take part in a Tele-Town Hall about  Health Care Reform with Senator Amy Klobuchar this Sunday, you need to pre-register.

Do so here. http://www.klobuchar.senate.gov/...

Need to register before Friday at noon.

How many times do we hear this?

Yes we know: Art I, Sec 8.

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

But!

There's even a better argument!

What else is not in the Constitution?

Senator Cornyn

by edgeways

Just faxed:

Senator Cornyn:

I am writing this in response to your recent tirade against seating Al Franken should he prevail in winning the MN state recount challenge in the MN courts. You alluded to WWIII as the outcome if the Democrats tried to seat Franken prior to all of Norm Coleman’s Federal court challenges, even if they take years.

Sir, I realize this is a blatant political move, you are currently in a minority party, and do not want to be even more in the minority, but with all due respect, butt the hell out. Keep your partisan hands out of our elections. I thought the Republicans where suppose to be all about "State’s rights"? Your threats are juvenile and ill becoming you, or any US Senator.

Watching the MN recount.

by edgeways

I spent some time yesterday and a few hours this am watching the MN canvassing board handle the contested ballot issues, and there is nothing surprising or unexpected in what they are doing.

Norm sues Al.

by edgeways

Seriously.

Norm Coleman is filing suit against Al Franken for defamation of character over a political ad. Not even a particularly nasty one at that.

Sarah Palin, the next Ross Perot

by edgeways

You heard it here first.

I predict that Sarah Palin will form her own Political party/movement and run as a third party candidate in 2012.

Why not run as a Republican you ask?

I wish we had more people in the world like Marg, Princess Warrior (Mary Walsh) and Rick Mercer.

Why? Because they are not only funny as hell, but brave as hell.
Those Canadians (Newfies).. whew.

(to be fair we have Colbert and Stewart, but somehow I don't think Colbert is going to give the POTUS quite the same personal attention as Marg does Harper)

I did it today.. it was easy. Walked up to the County Clerk's office filled out a little paperwork, took a wee test after reading about who can and can not vote. Bam, done....

One of the ways in which you can help in providing a fair election is being part of the system, be on the front lines. So in that vein I give you the massive list of 50+1 links to how you can become an Election Judge:

The coming ugly 8 weeks

by edgeways

In contemplation I think the Palin pick is the start of an attempt to shape the coming GE.

McCain, or whoever makes decisions for him now, could have gone in two ways. He could have picked someone moderate, someone nearer the center of American politics, Pawlenty for example, and fought for the middle ground. This would have done very little to energize the die-hard social conservatives and under this scenario he would be working against a candidate who has managed to appeal to the moderates fairly well as of late. Right before Palin a large turn out this year at the polls would nearly guarantee Obama the win, and given his ground game and his use of texting to communicate I think there would be a large turnout.
