Happy Martin Luther King's Day people. I hope you're all enjoying the long weekend and an extra day off.
I'd like to start off this day with some thoughts on racism in America and where it stands at this time in 2014. I'll start off first with radio personality Rush Limbaugh. Rush Limbaugh, as you all know, is a conservative radio host who is the highest paid media personalities in the US. He recently signed a contract through to 2016 that awards him 400 million dollars and his books regularly hit the New York Times bestseller list. His latest bit of oddballery is Rush Revere, a children's book (!) that is currently displayed prominently in the front window of every Barnes and Noble in our fair nation.
Rush Limbaugh is, like most Americans, a racist. Unlike most Americans however, Limbaugh is pretty upfront about his racism as many of his statements can attest to. "Flush Rush", an organization of which I am a proud member, has dedicated itself to ridding the airwaves of Limbaugh. "Flush Rush" has had a great deal of victories recently despite Clear Channel renewing its contract with Limbaugh. Before we lose ourselves in blissful fantasy where the world is free from Limbaugh however, let's ask a hard question: Can we really afford to lose such a blatant and necessary reminder that racism is very much alive in today's America?

Of course he's lying!
John Boehner, in an effort to eat his breakfast at a DC restaurant, tries to shrug off the pleas of two children of illegal immigrants who ask him to allow them to see their parents again.
Not gonna pull a Rand Paul here. This article says it better than I could.
When John Boehner decided to get breakfast this morning at a DC restaurant, he had no idea he would run into these two brave children of undocumented immigrants and be forced to “agree” that it’s time to reform our broken immigration system.
13-year-old Carmen Lima from Arizona and 16-year-old Jennifer Martinez from of Washington state pounced on the opportunity to confront speaker Boehner, and they definitely made the most of it.
The first thing Carmen asked was “You’re a father, right?” to which the Speaker replied affirmatively.
“So, how would you feel if you have to tell your children at the age of 10 that you are never coming home?”
Given his and his party’s intransigent obstructionism towards immigration reform, he cynically replied, “That wouldn’t be good.”
Carmen replied “That happened to me!”, to which Boehner conceded, “It’s not going to be an easy path forward, but I have made it clear since the day after the election that it’s time to give it a vote.”
Watch the whole amazing video here.
Representative Patrick Murphy, the young Democrat who unseated Allen West in the 2012 election by a sliver of a vote, is already steamrolling three potential Republican challengers for 2014 in fundraising alone.
According to this morning's Palm Beach Post (can't find a link to it, sorry. Just read about it in this morning's paper)
Three Republicans hoping to unseat nationally targeted freshman Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy raised a combined $98,867 from contributors other than themselves over the past three months- less than one-fifth of Murphy's cash haul during the same period.
The article goes on to say:
Murphy, of Jupiter, raised $529,482 in the quarter that ended Sept. 30 and has collected more than $2.1 million overall for his re-election campaign in Palm Beach- Treasure Coast U.S. House District 18, according to a Federal Election Commission report filled this week. Murphy has spent $787, 677 on his campaign so far and began October with $1.4 million in cash on hand.
Woohoo! This was the same Rep. Murphy that Nate Silver listed as extremely vulnerable
back in July.
Looks like the tide is changing when it comes to a Republican-controlled House! Thank you Ted Cruz!
Liberals. I mean, what can you say? What is with them and their irrational belief that Ted Cruz is a bad guy?? I mean, they're constantly talking about Cruz's hypocrisy in criticizing Wendy Davis supporters who cheered her epic filibuster because "It was unfortunate that a handful of protesters felt they had a right to shut down the legislative process,"... and then did exactly the same thing himself by performing a fake filibuster? Plus I can't friggin' log onto a political site without some dumb liberal talking about Ted Cruz's stance about denying thousands of impoverished Texans health care because he's got a beef against free money for a Medicaid expansion. AND there's been constant whining from the loony left about Cruz's brave efforts to expose the UN's nefarious plot to ban golf worldwide. AND there's just been lots of childish snickering all around about Cruz's noble crusade to abolish the IRS altogether and fill in the federal tax-collection logistics later. AND there's been boatloads of handwringing just because Cruz is willing to default on the debt and destroy the world economy just to make sure that a few sick people don't get the health care they need.
What's more, have I mentioned that there has been all sorts of immature questioning of Cruz's hypocrisy involving his own citizenship status when he himself allows birther-fetishism to run rampant in his own party? And OH the drama-queen groaning when Cruz stated that the right for a psychiatric patient to own an M16 with high-capacity rounds takes precedence over the right of a kindergartner to not get his head blown off during attendance. I mean, seriously! C'mon! Try and see the big picture! Have you ever known what it was like to live without an M4 or and M16 or even an AR-15? It's like living without fresh air or clean water! Of course Ted Cruz is is also opposed to those but hey! What's wrong with being forthright. Seriously, it is mystifying as to why these liberals hate Cruz.
Fortunately Jonah Goldberg has explained the mystery of the left's hatred of Ted Cruz.

California state lawmakers have sent Gov. Jerry Brown a proposal that would allow not just doctors but nurse practitioners to perform first-trimester abortions.
Let me just remind you that, unlike what forced-birth propaganda would like you to believe, the vast majority of abortions occur during the first trimester. Allowing not just doctors but nurse practitioners to perform these procedures would free up a helluva lot of bottlenecks in Cali. As the Los Angeles Times put it:
The abortion bill, by Assemblywoman Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), is aimed at expanding access to abortion in rural areas where a shortage of doctors makes it difficult to find someone to perform the procedure.
Amen. But notice, however, with even this crumb of good news regarding abortion rights the pro-choice movement is still stinking at the media game. This bill being put before Gov. Brown is not called the "Female Health" bill or the "Reproductive Health" bill but the "Abortion" bill. Furthermore newspapers are labeling the bill as being a gateway for "non-physicians" to perform D&Cs... as if Gov. Brown is giving the paper boy the okay for a menstrual extraction.
NO! The bill is simply allowing some very qualified people (a registered nurse practitioner for the state of California must have a Master's Degree of Nursing (MSN, which usually takes about six years to obtain after factoring in RN qualifications and miscellaneous pre-requisites) and hundreds of hours of clinical work under her belt.) and medical professionals to perform abortions.
Here's hoping Gov. Brown does what's right for the women of California.
Before I tell this story I should introduce myself a bit. I'm eowynsdottir and I'm your typical white progressive feminist living in Florida. If you accuse me of being racist I'll bristle and say: "Hey, I'm not racist! I write checks to the ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Firm every month! I have black friends! I vote Democratic! I'm totally not racist!"
In reality though, while I may write checks to the correct organizations I have no real emotional connection to the difficulties that African-Americans experience in Florida. I tsk-tsk at the Zimmerman case but I'm not out in the streets because of it. I sign the online petition to ask Governor Scott to pardon cold-blooded ceiling murderer Marissa Alexander but I'm not handcuffing myself to the State Capital because of her (though somebody should!) I may post my outrage over the fact that it's apparently open season on unarmed black men here in Florida but after I hit "post" I tend to forget about it, thinking I've done my bit to stop the injustice.
Subconsciously I know that I will never be personally affected by the rampant and dangerous racism here in Florida that is finally being seen by the rest of the country. Nobody ever called the cops because they saw a white woman in their gated community. No cop ever shot an unarmed white woman 15 times because she was standing a little too close to someone's car. I know that, for me, Florida's institutionalized racism will never be personal.
Until yesterday. Yesterday it got personal.

Barbara Bush, no not THAT Barbara Bush but her grand daughter and daughter of George W. Bush, has thrown her weight behind Hillary Clinton in 2016. Read on!
The 31-year-old daughter of the former Republican president said she found Clinton “unbelievably accomplished” and would like to see her make a second run for president, even though she couldn't guarantee her vote.
Well, yes, of course,... you mustn't upset dear old dad. Still, the fact that the DAUGHTER of perhaps the most conservative president in modern US history is endorsing Hillary Clinton is amazing!
Hey, remember when people worried about Hillary Clinton not having crossover appeal? I admit, I was one of those people, but wow! I might have to eat my words! Considering that the Republicans are increasingly painting themselves into a corner. and Democrats continue to act like the only adults in the room... this can only benefit us.
Good on ya, Barbara Bush! Yeah, Hillary Clinton is running and it's great to have you on our side. Yeah, your mom is a murderer with an odd, robot stare and your dad killed over a 100,000 innocent people in Iraq as well as over 4400 US soldiers because of a lie.... but maybe you tried to stop him. Maybe you tried your best to prevent what you knew would be a horror. God knows the rest of us tried.
Well anyway, welcome aboard!
From the "Saw It Coming a Mile Away" department, Texas' restrictive laws on abortion and birth control have been a boon to illegal abortion providers and miscarriage-inducing drug peddlers. Bloomberg has the whole story here:
At an open-air flea market outside McAllen, Texas (BEESTX), near the Mexican border, shoppers can buy a goat and get their car windows tinted. Tables with handwritten signs touting Viagra (MDPSVIAG) are stocked with herbal remedies promising to burn fat and boost breast size. You can also find pills to end a pregnancy.
Bazaars like this have become home to a black market where women too poor to afford an abortion at a clinic or deterred by state mandates such as a 24-hour waiting period can buy drugs to induce a miscarriage on their own, a dozen area residents and doctors said in interviews.
And, thanks to Governor Perry & Co., these black market bazaars are thriving....
“You’d be amazed at how many people, young people, are taking those pills,” said Erlinda Dasquez, a 29-year-old mother of four who has done so herself. “I probably know 12 to 20 people who have done this. My cousin just went to the flea market a few months ago.”
... and women are already suffering for it.
In the past few years, health-care providers in the valley, one of the state and nation’s poorest regions, have seen an increasing number of women suffering from incomplete abortions and bleeding after taking drugs unsupervised, they said.
More below the pretty curlicue.
Ireland is considering legalizing abortion in ...but only in VERY extreme circumstances. Apparently after the tragic and unnecessary death of Savita Halappanaver the government of Ireland have decided that maybe Irish women should be allowed a chance to keep their lives in the face of awful, hemorrhagic, preventable death.
Golly gee, thanks.
Ann Coulter threw the "L"-word at Sean Hannity two days ago. Hannity, as he (very) occasionally does, asked a reasonable question to Ann Coulter: "After enforcing border security, what would you do with the 11 million illegal immigrants already in our country?"
Coulter dodged the question several times, calling Hannity "like a liberal" for assuming that 11 million people in America simply CAN'T be torn away from their jobs and families and deported/left in legal limbo/ disappeared into the mist as hard-right Republicans wish to have happen.
Coulter then went on into a racist rant about needing to "punish the people who destroyed America" which sort of sent chills down my spine. (Is she advocating sending undocumented immigrants to concentration camps?) and then went on to say that Hispanics were a horrible demographic because they were the most "anti-semitic" ethnic group in the US.
Forgive me, but as a Jew I find Coulter's Hitleresque quote about "punishing the people who destroyed America" far more horrifying than anything any person of Latino descent has ever said to me.
Coulter then went on to describe the hell America will turn into if Marco Rubio has his way (???!!!!??? yes, Marco Rubio is a "liberal" to Ann Coulter) "We will turn into California and the Republican party will never win another national election again."
Watch the whole interview here.
If you are like me, you were probably very moved by Ms. Becky Gerritson's testimony concerning IRS targeting of conservative groups. Gerritson is the president of the Wetumpka Tea Party in Alabama... and right away you can feel sorry for her!
First of all, anyone who must say with a straight face that she is associated with an organization with the word "Wetumpka" in its title has my sympathies. I am sure that the Wetumpka Tea Party is a proud Tea Party, far outstripping the Tea Party from Hell...but being forced to say such sentences as "In Wetumpka, we are patriotic Americans" over and over again on national television in front of members of Congress must have been difficult.
Still, Ms Gerritson fighting back tears as she eloquently describes the horrors this liberal government had inflicted on her was deeply emotional for me.

Frankly, if anything makes me truly happy, it is pro life guys. Nothing gets a girl going like watching a be-penised individual like Rick Santorum or Rick Perry or George W. Bush or any crowd of smiling white guys smugly deciding the fate of women throughout our great nation. Also, keep in mind that well over half of all male members of Congress are anti-abortion compared to the fact that only 28% of all women in Congress are anti-abortion.
Yeah, well, what do women know though, right? It's not like any WOMAN would have a worthwhile opinion about pregnancy or gynecological health scares or unprepared-for motherhood! Only men, with their cool distance from the emotions of the subject, can make rational decisions about abortion and birth control. Only someone who has never faced the frightening possibility of pregnancy and child birth can truly understand!
This is why I, a woman, will now make a decision that will only personally affect men. As a woman I have never known the fear of being involuntarily drafted into the military. I have never been in danger of suddenly being shipped off overseas to fight and die for something I didn't necessarily believe in. Thus, with this cool, rational, unemotional distance on the issue.... I've decided that all American men between the ages of 18 and 35 should be drafted into the military and forced to serve overseas in order to save innocent lives in Syria, North Korea, and Iran.
