Nearly everybody knows that last year Congress had 239 vacation/"district work period" days and accomplished close to nothing.
So this Tuesday, the House will meet for the first time in 2014. They'll be meeting a grand total of 113 days this year, including two days in October and none in August: which, for the record, is down from two days in August last year.
365-113 is 252, which gives congress nearly two weeks MORE of vacation time this year than last year.
Surprise, surprise!
The election is not making things better. Presumably, the lack of time in October is for them to campaign. I should, of course, change that to "campaign and raise money" as most people in congress spend more time doing the latter than the former.
Actually, they get a week off every month, giving everybody a choice between going home and actually connecting with the people who voted for them (or not), the legit thing to do considering that these weeks off are referred to as "district work periods"; or embarking on a tour of rich peoples' homes in New York, California, Texas, and Chicago to raise money for misleading attack ads on their opponents.
I think I know what Eric Cantor will choose.

Senate:http://www.senate.gov/... They're not much better: they get a week off most months, but unlike the house they still have to work in October. Although I'm sure senators up for reelection will get a pass.
