In case you missed it this week, our dear friends at the publication formerly known as Michigan's largest newspaper (a.k.a. The Detroit News) have solved the Iraq problem:

I've just gone through and updated the master State House & Senate lists with the latest fundraising totals. See them by clicking on the links below:

State Senate
State House

An interesting observation from looking at these lists. Judging solely from money raised by candidate committees (by NO means a completely accurate predictor of what will happen Nov. 7!) - Democrats will have a 1-vote majority in the State Senate, and be 1-vote shy of a 50-50 split in the State House. Again, I repeat, this is JUST looking at money raised. District trends, polling, the candidate's smile and handshake, or any rumors of trysts with barnyard animals - are not taken into account.

Here in Michigan our exciting governor's race between incumbent Democrat Jennifer Granholm and wacky Amway billionaire Dick DeVos (known to us as "Amway Guy") has generated a whole slew of interesting and creative videos. Seeing as we're now just 18 days from election time, I decided it was high time for a grand finale! Just for you and your viewing pleasure, I picked my 14 favorite and put them together on a You Tube playlist.

C'mon over to, check 'em out, vote for your favorite, and go Granholm!!!
Man, I love the Internet Archive. If you know what you're doing, you can find some really neat things on a list of pedophile ex-Rep. Mark Foley's 2002-2004 fundraisers that once appeared on the National Republican Congressional Committee website. Of particular note to us here in MI-08:
October 2, 2002 5:30-7:00 pm Join Candidate Katherine Harris (FL-13) for a Reception with Congressman Henry Hyde (IL-6), Congressman Mark Foley (FL-16), Congressman Richard Burr (NC-5) and Congressman Mike Rogers (MI-8) The Home of Congressman Mark Foley (FL-16) - 137 D Street, SE $1,000 per PAC; $500 per Individual Keelen Communications (703) 548-0092 or e-mail (emphasis added)
It gets better. Read below the fold for more, including the rest of Foley's NRCC "engagements"...

Full disclosure: I am a paid consultant to the Coalition for Progress. But even if I wasn't, I would totally still be writing a post right now about the CFP's new TV ad targeting the Republicans who control both Houses of Michigan's legislature.

Now....without further ado...throw the dogs out of the room, take the phone off the hook, go to the CFP website and WATCH THE AD (click here):

Take a look
at this new animation which just debuted today at the Michigan Democratic Convention. It's well worth your time. Love that pyramid!

More about billionaire Bush-backer Dick Devos (R) and Amway here.

See the NBC Dateline expose of Quixtar (the new incarnation of Amway in America that Dick DeVos started) here.

BTW, the latest EPIC-MRA poll has incumbent Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) pulling ahead by 7 points. Definitely good news for Granholm - who has been referred to as the nation's most vulnerable Democratic Governor...but not for long if we have our way.

Remember a few weeks ago when my ex-boss and East Lansing political list kingpin Mark Grebner (D) called attention to the massive statewide mailing Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land's (R) office sent out to all registered voters. Remember when he suggested it could be part of an effort by Land to "clean up" the state voter file?

Well, take a look at this letter to a Michigan voter just obtained by (click on image for .tif version):

Here's what it says:

MI07 Schwarz postmortem

by fergusonforcongress

If only US Rep. Joe Schwarz (R-MI) had become a Democrat...

Back in 2004, I spoke with a DCCC staffer who told me Schwarz was literally inches away from running as a Democrat. Alas, after years as a Republican State Senator, he just couldn't bring himself to make the switch. Had he done so, Joe would have had a tough race. But I think he still would have won - and wouldn't now be getting ready to pack up his belongings.

Q: What do a basement full of brawling and bloody college Republicans, a Lansing-based right-wing indoctrination program for high schoolers, and male prostitute/fake White House correspondent "Jeff Gannon" have in common?

A: DeVos/Amway money. (Amway heir Dick DeVos is running for Governor of Michigan) Intrigued? Read on...

I'm still bothered by the speech I heard Michigan Republican State Chairman Saul Anuzis give before several hundred high school kids at the annual Boys State conference a few weeks ago (see earlier post). This was the occasion where Saul used a quotation to the effect of: "there are two kinds of people, Democrats and Americans." To make such a statement - even in jest - before a group of high school students seemed to me incredibly asinine and irresponsible.

So I decided to go ask Saul about it.

This morning, I took my recorder and sauntered down to Saul's newser at the Capitol. As soon as Rick Albin (WOOD-TV) was done with his stand-up I weaseled my way in and got to work. Listen here to find out what went down (.mp3)

Inspired by yesterday's insane U.S. Supreme Court ruling on apportionment, I decided it was finally time to get serious about getting some momentum going in our Michigan legislative races.

Starting today, anyone who is logged into as a user (anyone with an email address) can vote for one of seven Democratic State Senate candidates who currently accept contributions online. The candidate who wins will recieve Michlib's innaugural "Michigan First!" endorsement - meaning the candidate's name, an indication of his or her worthiness, and a hyperlink to their campaign website will permanently appear in a special box on our front page. The whole concept is based off of the fabulously successful DFA list. If this works, we'll focus on the state House next.

Voting is open until 5PM, July 7. Tell all of your Michigander/Michiganian friends.

Tomorrow night, in an old brick church just across the street from the state Capitol building, I will stand before members of my family, friends, and the Congregation of St. Paul's parish and enter into the Baptismal Covenant. The ritual will culminate in the following, as described in the Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church, USA:
