Ursula K. LeGuin received the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation yesterday. Presented to her by Neil Gaiman ;-)
She's one of my favorite authors, and to read that she received the recognition she has deserved for a long while was heartening to this reader.
...I rejoice at accepting it for, and sharing it with, all the writers who were excluded from literature for so long, my fellow authors of fantasy and science fiction—writers of the imagination, who for the last 50 years watched the beautiful rewards go to the so-called realists.
Has anyone else around here seen the vapid op-ed by one of our favorite shuns-publicity-but funds-every-right-wing-wacko-in-America Koch brother?
Look at the illustration accompanying said vapid op-ed! Frakking hilarious!
The new Koch Bros. banner?
Just another example of lazy no-good gummit teat-sucking loafers, I suppose ;-)
"It's kind of in the blood of everyone you see out here – it's in my blood – community service, public service. It's kind of what we do," furloughed worker Scott Mathias said. "It's what you do every day in the office, and when you're not in the office, it's kind of hard to imagine what you should do other than help your community."
I just found this out from a great email, and I can't even find this info on MSNBC's site!
MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" will broadcast live from Elizabeth City, North Carolina on Thursday, August 22 at 9 p.m. ET. Maddow will devote the full hour broadcast to exploring the North Carolina voting revisions signed into law last week.
I'm going to try and find it online or go find a neighbor with cable, heh heh heh...
Update: friendly emailer sent these links:
Local TV station
(they could use some support in the comments)
ECSU Facebook page has the announcement but no details
Go to the comments mentioned in the first link, you know what to do ;-)
Now off to my appt. late (the dog picked now to do her Houdini trick, and I had to get her first, but glad to get these links up!)
Navajo gave me this assignment a while back. Better late than never?
Or more like we need all hands on deck here in The Old North State, and fighting the ALEC-powered machine always goes easier with a bunch of people you've visited/drank/picnicked/dined/drank with etc. as we all know. What, I have one too many drinks in the previous sentence? Oh no, I don't have enough drinks, considering what we've been though in the last two years :-(
I have a long history with the infamous SF Kossacks, so when we moved to Raleigh four years ago (yikes time flies when your rights are being stripped away), I wanted to replicate the camaraderie as best I could, being that I am not a Diva like my mentor ;-)
I'll close my eyes and jump...
But didn't overcome the red counties this time.
I'm a relative newbie here in NC, so I may not know some of the back story here.
But wanted to put up a short but sweet (I hope) diary. I know we took Wake county finally... and the other usual suspects, county-wise came through I think.
But next time... the tide of history and demographics are with us... Although now we have a GOP governor and legislature. NC has one of the best early voting systems in the nation. But that's going to change, we know this. The new governor has already come out in favor of changing this all for the worst.
Bev Perdue's veto of the abominable stripping of voter's rights will not hold after McCrory takes over in January
My tweet responding to the incomprehensibly self-serving tweet by a major figure in US politics. Incredible.
This is from the head of the fucking GOP:
I agree that this tool should resign over this statement, and is a shining example as to why these goons need to be as far as possible from the nuclear button.
Gotta agree with this, as well:
So now #BelieveInAmerica is showing up as promoted by Ryan… as in paid for.
We've been doing so great at turning lemons into lemonade on twitter… Let's do it again.
It's fun, it's easy, it only takes a couple of minutes, and doesn't take you away from more serious work.
I'm mostly in mourning over this…
Wunderground.com sold to The Weather Channel Companies
It's true. After 17 years as an independent company, Weather Underground has been sold, and will now be part of The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC.) As one of the founders of Weather Underground, I am excited about embarking upon this new chapter in our company's history. Having the infrastructure, resources, and content of The Weather Channel Companies will enable wunderground to create some great new products, and improve the quality and reliability of our existing content.
A point of reference for those who don't get it: (2+ / 0-)
This is like Markos selling DailyKos to News Corp.
If you say "gullible" real slow, it sounds like "green beans."

Just caught this at TPM (via PBS Newshour Politics mailing list link):
Netroots Nation Won’t Have RightOnline To Kick Around Anymore
Didn't see this mentioned here yet, so this is one of those FYI diaries.
Only two question marks, where I would have liked to put ten exclamation points!
What a way to wake up from oversleeping 'till noon after taking a muscle relaxant for the first time last night (back injury). I'm heartbroken, damnmit! He's my guy in congress, I was so happy to find out when we had to move in '09 that we'd be in his district. Then 2010 happened. Like state houses everywhere in the nation, our new teabagger General Assembly went into overdrive, ramming through the right-wing wish list, and Perdue broke records with her vetoes, but most were overturned.
Now... were are we now? Over the Squiggly Of Power for one thing.
