This my first diary and post on Daily Kos, so I thought I should write about how I got interested into politics and how over the last few years my politics went from being a moderate Democrat to basically a Social Democrat.
I have been home-schooled since the seventh grade and started taking community college classes in tenth grade, during this time, I became very interested in politics during the 2008 campaign and my interest continues to this day. Originally, I had only considered myself to be a moderate or even conservative Democrat, but I really had two experiences that dramatically challenged my beliefs.
1.) While attending a weekly class for home-schoolers at a local Christian school, someone asked me a random question and somewhere in that conversation I mentioned if I could vote I would be a Democrat, and the other person completely flipped out, calling me a "baby killer" and a whole host of other derogatory names, if that was not bad enough, basically no one else would talk to me in that class for the next several months.
2.) My second experience was throughout the fall of 2012, I was taking two back to back Sociology classes in college, and discovered how screwed up America is with corporate money, or healthcare system as compared to European nations, our horrific immigration laws and a wide host of other issues ranging from the income inequality gap to human trafficking. While taking this class, I started to come to the realization that moderate politicians and leaders need to be challenged by Senators like Bernie Sanders, Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren and that overall, our two party political system is not actually addressing any of the roots of the problems and both parties willfully ignore them.
