Welcome to Meatless Mondays!  This week I am subbing for the fabulous beach babe in florida.

In this weekly series we have been discussing the benefits of a vegetarian diet including: better health, animal rights, frugal living, food safety, global food crisis, public health and the staggeringly huge impact of livestock/meat production to climate change/resource depletion.

Last week's filibuster by Rand Paul, the #standwithrand twitter tag, and controversy of whether or not progressives or liberals (take your pick, IMO they are pretty interchangable but I know that not everyone feels that way) should indeed "stand" with Rand got me to thinking about when and if it is every OK to stand with someone who is against everything that you stand for simply because you happen to agree with one thing they are currently doing.

thanks, Obama

by kirbybruno

Since you have taken office, I have gained 10 pounds, thanks a lot.

I have run out of milk on more than one occasion, and have had fruits and vegetables go bad in my fridge before I got a chance to eat them, wtf.

We haven't had an inch of snow in 328 days in Chicagoland, a record, I am pretty sure this is your fault too. Thanks.

Er... I mean Democrats!!

Democrats and our President have been attacked and called baby killers, lazy, socialists, crackheads, child murders, sluts, fags, takers, fanboys, fangirls, Obamabots, communists, dirty hippies, and much, much more. The extremists who use these words do it to break our spirit, embarrass us, and intimidate us not to vote. Of course, that just made us stronger and more determined to GOTV and and the proof is in the results on Tuesday night. Racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, insults, all tools to try and demonize our party and candidates.

I Vote for Democrats

by kirbybruno

I Vote for Democrats.  I am a liberal, I have progressive values, and I say it with pride.  I am voting for Democrats in the election this year, and I am doing it with pride.  I do it because I care, and I cannot stand by and not support the people and the party that is working for me. There are things that I want from my president and party, and there are things that I expect they can actually deliver. As long as the gap between the two continues to get smaller, I will continue to wholeheartedly support the President and our party.

When I watch all of the nasty ads on TV and see the narrow minded, hateful signs at GOP rallies I know that I am not voting for the "lesser of two evils". I am not voting against the hate and the ignorance and the selfishness of the Republican party.  I am voting for everything that they are against because it is the right thing to do. The right thing for women. For the middle class. For minorities. For the poor. For the planet. For the sick. For veterans. For marriage equality. For civil rights.

For what is right.

Jan. 20, 2009 “President-elect Barack Obama was about to walk out to take the oath of office. Backstage at the U.S. Capitol, he took one last look at his appearance in the mirror.”

If you did not see John Lewis' speech at the Democratic National Convention this evening, watch it. Now. I have already watched it twice and I cannot tell you how humble it made me feel, and even though I thought I was passionate about winning before this really magnified that passion ten fold.

This is the passage that the diary title came from:

Since then, America has made a lot of progress. We are a different society than we were in 1961. And in 2008, we showed the world the true promise of America when we elected President Barack Obama. A few years ago, a man from Rock Hill, inspired by President Obama's election, decided to come forward. He came to my office in Washington and said, "I am one of the people who beat you. I want to apologize. Will you forgive me?" I said, "I accept your apology." He started crying. He gave me a hug. I hugged him back, and we both started crying. This man and I don't want to go back; we want to move forward.

90 Reasons!! - I Vote For Democrats

by kirbybruno

(Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

Who do you want sitting in the motorcade making decisions that will affect you in every possible way for the next four years?

A leader whose mean-spirited and intolerant platform represents the face of Republican politics in 2012?

Or a leader that responds to such disgusting intolerance with this attitude: we shouldn’t have a bunch of politicians – the majority of whom are men – making decisions” about women’s health.

What's For Dinner, Summer's Bounty

by kirbybruno

Well, that was the initial thought anyway. I love to cook and I love to bake, so when I signed up to do one of these diaries the trickiest part was deciding what to do. The possibilities are endless! Since the week I chose was in August, and I also love to garden, I thought I would narrow it down by making a summer meal from the garden, which I try to do usually starting right about now.

Unfortunately, the drought and extreme heat in Illinois has taken it's toll, and my garden this year is less than stellar. I was lucky enough to grab some ripe tomatoes from my next door neighbor that I have been watering and house sitting for (they told me to I swear!) and gather a few other ingredients to make this happen.

What's For Dinner is a community diary on Saturday evenings about 7:30 pm EST where cyber friends get together and discuss food and share recipes. Pull your chair up to the table and leave politics at the door. Pour yourselves a drink and relax.
