I just got back from two weeks deep in the heart of Texas. A family reunion brought in relatives from Oklahoma too. I mostly kept my mouth shut, but politics were occasionally mentioned and I was proud that I was circumspect in the comments I did make. I was there to listen and listen I did. Here is what I learned that my relatives and others think of Trump and the state of the Union Texas style:
Trump is “trying” and “learning”. It’s lamentable that he shoots off his mouth, but he is generally doing just fine. (Really, they said this!)
Single payer insurance is ok and will probably be implemented by the states, not Federal government.
The biggest issue-abortion. They would vote for the devil himself if he were anti-abortion. It’s the one issue they will not compromise on.
Mexicans aren’t all bad, but there are just too many of them.
Gays are bad, except for all the nice ones they happen to know.
Transgender people? They absolutely do not “get” transgender. “What’s all that about?”
Gay and transgender kids in the Boy Scouts? Heaven forbid!
Don’t forget abortion!
God, guns, gays and more god.
Some of them are pro-environment, but they have no idea that the Republicans are trying to undo all the environmental protections, and will never believe anything to the contrary. In fact there are a great many Republican policies they do not agree with, but they do not believe Republicans hold those policies, if anything, they think Democrats do.
I love those people, but It’s hard not to despair at the ignorance of otherwise intelligent people. Fox has a lot to answer for.
A little off topic, but why can’t we have our own version of Fox “news”? Are there no rich Democrats that could start their own channel? We are being heavily outgunned!
