Obama, Free Fry & Schafer!

by marcy winograd

When I called Mollie Fry and Dale Schafer’s home near Sacramento, three days before their surrender to federal authorities, Mollie answered in tears, her words interrupted by bad coughs.  A breast cancer survivor, Mollie faces five years in prison for using and distributing less than two pounds of medical marijuana over a five-year period.  She and her hemophiliac husband, Dale, argue they complied with state law – California’s Compassionate Use Act – but none of that mattered.  All that matters now is that Mollie and Dale, also facing five years, will miss the birth of their granddaughter, expected this October, and that Mollie may die in prison.

Dear Daily Kos Community,

When I heard the news that Jane Harman was resigning, I thought, ‘Now we finally have an opportunity to send a progressive to Congress, someone who will work to create jobs in the new economy, to free the 36th District from its perpetual war footing.'

I was at school, in between teaching classes, checking my cell phone messages from news editors, bloggers, and former campaign supporters, all asking the same question …

‘Will you run again?’

Dear Daily Kos Community,

I question why my opponent Jane Harman chooses to remain silent in the aftermath of the Israeli assault on the Free Gaza flotilla carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to over a million Palestinians imprisoned in Gaza.

I'm Bustin' Banks & Harman, Too

by marcy winograd

Dear Daily Kos Community,

While most of America was losing its shirt during the economic meltdown, my opponent Jane Harman (CA-36)  was bailing out Goldman Sachs -- without revealing her $1 million to $5 million dollar investment in the banking Goliath.

Clearly, Harman should have recused herself from the vote. In effect, she voted to bail out her own financial portfolio with billions of our tax dollars.

Let's not bail out my opponent with another two years in Congress.

Here's one of my new campaign ads:

Roxy & Me

Dear Pootie & Woozle Lovers,

I am a lover of life -- and that means animals, too.  Running for Congress can be stressful, so when I want to relax or take a mental break on the campaign trail I visualize our family's wonderful rescue pets.  I think of Roxy (black dog pictured above) who I walk every morning around Marina del Rey, Sparky,  (Jack WaWa), the hyper-dog who back flips in our new campaign headquarters, as well as our cats, Sunnyman, Mr. Tuxedo, and Cayenne, the red Democrat.  If only I could take these pets to Capitol Hill ... Ah well, at the very least I can advocate for them and their welfare.

Dear Daily Kos Community,

Imagine if in 2010 we did not spend one more borrowed penny to manufacture new weapons, occupy new lands, or recruit new mercenaries.  Going cold turkey on military spending would wipe out nearly $1 trillion of our 1.6 trillion dollar deficit.  A year and a half of war & weapons abstinence could erase our debt entirely.

Unfortunately, America is addicted to war and to debt.
Fortunately, we can work together to kick the perpetual war and debt habit.

Dear Daily Kos Community/Kogs/Kosters/Kossacks, etc.,

In the 2006 primary, with only three months of campaigning, I won nearly 38% of the vote against Blue Dog corporate Democrat Jane Harman, the self-described Best Republican in the Democratic Party who voted for the bankruptcy bill, the Patriot Act, and the Iraq invasion.

Four years later, I'm back with an experienced team, ready to win. And I'm back here on Daily Kos because I need your talent, energy, time and support.

Stay with me.

Dear Daily Kos Community/Kogs/Kosters/Kossacks, etc.,

Like so many of you, I’ve had enough of people like Joe Lieberman hijacking health care reform. Four years ago, it was the voters who put him back in office – a decision I suspect many are regretting.

Unfortunately, there’s more than one "Lieberman" in Congress. My Blue Dog opponent Jane Harman is the Lieberman of the House – priding herself on her ties to war profiteers and Big Pharma – all the while pretending to be a liberal.

My Blue Dog opponent refuses to debate me.  I am ready and willing - and I have a question for Jane Harman:  Why did you side with Republicans to defeat a mortgage-relief  amendment to the financial overhaul bill? With several thousand people in our district (CA-36) facing foreclosure, we’re looking at neighborhoods from West Los Angeles to San Pedro turning from beauty to blight.

It behooves everyone in Congress to demand that big banks, the overnight recipients of billion-dollar bail-outs, renegotiate loans in bankruptcy court.  After all, we must remember these banks, the ones we bailed out, caused the financial meltdown with predatory sub-prime lending.

Dear Daily Kos Community,

I voted for Barack Obama.   In fact, I volunteered for his campaign.

But I am not afraid to speak out when the President makes a mistake.

It is wrong to send 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan.

War is Not a Green Job

by marcy winograd

Imagine if the U.S. government provided a plethora of alternatives for the best and brightest of our engineering graduates.

My brilliant young cousin, we’ll call her Linda Pearl, works as a rocket scientist at a local aerospace plant a few miles from LAX.  Linda Pearl considers herself one of the lucky college grads who landed a job in the space end of the aerospace industry.  Some of her friends, the not-so-lucky ones, are designing drones for a living, knowing all the while that these euphemistically-called unmanned aerial vehicles sometimes miss their terrorist target and blow up an innocent wedding party in Afghanistan.

Help Me Replace a Blue Dog

by marcy winograd

Dear Friends,

We stand at the crossroads of economic challenge and national rebirth, of oil dependence and clean energy and green jobs.   A choice between a weak band-aid or true health care reform.

To get real change - we must take clear, consistent positions.

That's why I am running to replace a Blue Dog corporate Democrat in the June 8, 2010 Democratic Party primary.

My challenge to Jane Harman will prove critical to the progressive movement.  Enough of trillion-dollar wars and bank bail-outs that rob our country of money needed for health care, education, and environmental protection.  My victory over a staunch defender of the Bush administration's foreign policy and constitutional crimes will empower progressive Democrats across the country.
