Dear Kossacks:

U.S. leaders are dramatically stepping up their saber rattling against the Iranian regime, promoting "crippling sanctions" and military action against the country. Experts across the political spectrum agree that these actions will do great harm to the Iranian people, the most pro-American population in the Middle East, destabilize the region, and increase support for the country's despotic, brutal regime.

It is imperative that we act now to advocate vigorously against counterproductive and human rights-abusing approaches to the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.

Please join concerned Americans and prominent luminaries and opinion leaders in signing this petition to President Obama and Congress. The petition has also been endorsed by Physicians for Social Responsibility, Faith Voices, and Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. Show your support for effective, peaceful, and human rights-promoting solutions to the dispute.

We need thousands of signatures to prevent yet another disastrous, violent, and harmful course of action in the Middle East. Thank you in advance for your support of peace, human rights, and our nation's shared tradition of democratic ideals.

In gratitude,
Rocky Anderson

Please take a moment to sign this petition, initiated by Graham Nash, Daniel Ellsberg, David Swanson, Naomi Wolf, Noam Chomsky, and many other prominent Americans, which urges solidarity with the Iranian people and a peaceful resolution to the tensions over Iran's nuclear program. The petition drive is being organized by High Road for Human Rights and Omid for Iran, who will submit the petition to President Obama and Congress after gathering signatures.

The need to support fundamental human rights in Iran, preserve U.S. national security and international stability, and protect the Iranian people from the devastating effects of armed conflict and harsh sanctions has never been more urgent. More information can be found in the press release below. Thank you for your support and for all that you do.

The course, "The Courts, Congress, and Executive Power: What every lawyer needs to know about the transformation of our republic and the rule of law in an age of terror," is open to all members of the public, and earns attorneys two hours of continuing legal education credit. Some of the issues Anderson and Fein will discuss include accountability for torture, extraordinary rendition, Fourth Amendment protections, war powers, due process rights, and the nature and meaning of the war on terror. Proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit organizations High Road for Human Rights and the American Freedom Agenda. More information and registration is available at www.ruleoflawcle.com.

Led by High Road for Human Rights, prominent Americans, including authors, artists, legal experts, and renowned voices of conscience, today transmitted a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder urging the appointment of a prosecutor to investigate allegations of torture and other violations of human rights and civil liberties committed by former government officials and others. The complete text of the letter is below. Please support our efforts and make your voices heard to restore the rule of law and ensure accountability in our nation. If we are not willing to abide by our commitments to human rights and the rule of law and at least evaluate possible crimes committed by government officials for prosecution, future administrations may well feel emboldened to again break the law, and other nations will continue to use the conduct of our government as an excuse for their own human rights-abusing practices. Thanks for you support.

WILL WE STAND UP FOR EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW?

Have we become a nation where the rich and the powerful can avoid accountability under our laws, including international treaties and our Constitution?

IS POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY AN EXCUSE FOR IMMUNIZING POWERFUL PEOPLE FROM THEIR CRUEL, ILLEGAL MISCONDUCT?

Have we become a nation where long-time treaty obligations forbidding torture and requiring prosecution for war crimes can simply be set aside by a president who wants to avoid the political ramifications of holding powerful people accountable for their outrageous, illegal acts?

   "No torture. No exceptions."

Until the last few years, that has been the proud official tradition of our nation. It is what has distinguished the United States from many tyrannies in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, torture has become US official policy for the first time in our country’s history.

High Road for Human Rights Education Project is a unique grassroots organization, raising consciousness about important human rights issues and bringing people from throughout the nation together to advocate for more humane national policies and practices.

We would like to inform you that a new powerful, informative, and inspirational video about torture has been added to the High Road for Human Rights web site:
www.highroadforhumanrights.org.

We ask that you do three things to stop the outrageous use of torture – and the practice of kidnapping, disappearing and torturing people around the world – by the US government:

Testimony ofRoss C. "Rocky" Anderson
Regarding Illegal Conduct and Other Egregious Abuses  by the President of the United States
and Other Members of His Administration
and Possible Steps Toward Accountability, Future Deterrence, and Reform

I am honored to address you today and am pleased that you are considering your solemn responsibility to ascertain and disclose to the American people the nature and scope of illegal conduct and other egregious abuses of power by the administration.  Ascertaining and disclosing the truth about these matters is vital in order to restore our constitutional democracy, the rule of law,  and the crucial role Congress plays in a system of checks and balances that has been utterly emasculated by members of the administration.

A lot of people might recall the Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson's speeches the last two times Bush came to Salt Lake City. (2006 speech) (2007 speech)

Well, Rocky is planning an even larger demonstration when President Bush and Mitt "double-gitmo" Romney visit Utah again next week next week.

Since leaving office in Jan, has formed High Road for Human Rights Advocacy Project, which is sponsoring the event.

Rally for Peace and Human Rights.

If you're in Utah next Wednesday, May 28th, take an hour from 5:30 - 6:30pm at Washington Square in Downtown Salt Lake City (451 South State Street) and lend your voice to this protest.

Even if you're not in the Salt Lake City area next Wednesday, High Road could use a a little help with money to help defray costs. This is a very expensive undertaking and High Road is a non-profit still in its very early stages. You can help out HERE.
