and he spoke at my daughter's graduation ceremony this past Monday. He's the head honcho at the National Endowment for the Humanities. I posted a diary about it last night asking how I can talk to my white 24 year old son so that he can feel like he has a place in today's society. I said I'd post the text of Bro's speech in the comments to that diary, but the speech is so good I decided to post a transcript of it here as a new post. Check beneath the orange squiggle of cautiously optimistic hope if you're interested.
I just got home from my daughter's graduation from Colorado College. One of the speakers was Bro Adams, the head honcho at the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Bro was awesome. Bro talked about how a liberal arts education is the best education ever devised for young people if you're talking about how to care for each other in a way that's good for everyone.
No, really. He DID that. He wasn't a pompous white asshole male at ALL. If I can get the tape of his speech, I'll post it in the comments, because it was SO good even to me who has most, if not all, of her barriers up when white males start talking.
Which brings me back to my question.
How can I ... How can we parents who have white sons talk to them so that they don't have to choose between being the ASSHOLE or being the WUSS. What can I say to my white WASP son to make him feel like he has a place in society for the next several decades? That his existence doesn't depend on him and people who look and act like him, whether it be via skin tone or genitalia, being the top dog? That he can be cool with his mother who fights like hell for all the rest of us and that we need his voice, too?
This is a sincere question. I am seeking sincere discussion. Thank you.
Today is Mothers' Day. It's also my birthday. I really love it when I get to celebrate my birth and the births of my children on the same day. It makes my heart so big and warm that I want to tell others about what they mean to me.
You, DK, have been an important part of my consciousness for the past, what is it, two years? Something like that. Thank you so much for this progressive forum where the assholes at least have functioning brains in their heads!
Seriously, the assholes on this site have made me think about things that the Sarah Palins and Donald Trumps of the world would never have inspired me to think about. For that, I hold the assholes on this site in high regard.
I love it that I was born and I love it that I'm a mother. I believe that black lives matter, I believe that girls who live in occupied Palestine will benefit from girls' soccer clubs introduced and sustained in their neighborhoods, I believe that paying somebody $15 dollars an hour to come do some yardwork I can no longer do but needs to be done is a good deal. It doesn't matter to me that I only make $12 an hour on a good day. I believe that most doctors and teachers give a shit and that the work they do should be well paid. I believe that most politicians and cops have lost their way and they would be well served by being forced to spend time around ... but no, this is where I could easily unwind.
I'll just leave this by saying that I'm so happy I found DK and all the fab diarists I read here. In the words of my most fave young 'uns, including the two that I spawned and will be celebrating all day today ...
I believe that WE WILL WIN!
On Wednesday, the 29th of April, GEO Corporation held its annual shareholders' meeting in Boca Raton, Florida.
A little back story: GEO Corporation, if you don't know, is the largest prison for profit corporation in Florida. A couple of years ago, GEO Corporation thought it would be cool to have a stadium named after them, so they offered Florida Atlantic University (FAU), part of the public university system in Florida, $6 million to name their new stadium the GEO Stadium.
FAU administration said, "Cool! $6 million is a wadda bucks. Bring it on!"
FAU students said, "Not so fast. We kinda think it's not that great to profit from prisoners."
FAU administration said, "There, there. It's okay. We know what's best for you. Don't sweat this one."
FAU students and faculty and community members said, "You know what? It's NOT okay. You making profits by turning our loved ones into criminals is NOT okay. In fact, it's immoral."
Long story short, the students won and the stadium is not named after GEO. We need tons and tons of these victories so ...
Flash forward to two years later and the GEO shareholders' meeting that happened last Wednesday. We gotcher number, GEO. Lots of photos beneath the orange squiggle of justice.
The United States of America has a black female attorney general. That's a pretty BFD, imo. May justice thrive in this country like never before with Loretta Lynch at the helm!
The Dream Defenders, who formed on the eve of the hideous Zimmerman verdict, are still acting in love. They're a big part of why you know the names of not only Trayvon Martin but also Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, John Crawford, and the beat goes on.
I got to spend a little of my Easter with them and just want to share with y'all a picture of their beauty.
I hope each of you had a peaceful day. I also hope you'll do what you can to make justice real instead of something we simply, and often coercively, make our school children pledge allegiance to.
Sometimes when you get older
the weight of the world becomes apparent.
Then you think ...
HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED?!!!
Who knows? Voices matters. Here's to voices!
or the Constitution tells me so.
Or maybe Bill Moyers or Fox News or John Stewart or Rush Limbaugh or Rachel Maddow tells me so.
Or maybe not.
I look forward to a day when those who cash you out at convenience stores, or pick up your garbage and take it to a place where you don't have to smell it, or recognize when you come into the emergency room you actually need IMMEDIATE CARE and they get it for you ...
I look forward to the day that people providing those services are paid enough to make rent, insurance, car payments, heat, cooling, water, and even enough extra to go get ice cream with the kids every now and then.
I just saw this uncaptioned image on Facebook from a friend of mine who I'm pretty sure doesn't read DK daily. I'm wondering how y'all would caption it.
Please feed my curiosity with your comments. Thank you.
I started Georgia Tech in 1980 when the female enrollment in the school was about 20%. I was a child of the '60s and '70s, a product of my culture and all that. I went to a lot of frat parties my freshman year and drank and danced and had some good times. I also heard some songs.
The main frat I partied with for a few months 35 years ago was Delta Tau Delta. Their favorite song to sing went like this:
She was a virgin in her freshman year.
She was a sophomore with her conscience clear.
She never smoked or drank or ran around.
She was the envy of every college girl in town but then she
met a Delt from Gamma Phi
and she lost her old vaginitI.
Now she is a whore down in gay Paree
and the mother of an SAE.
The SAE's were right across the fence. DTD and ΣΑΕ were next door neighbors. I heard ΣΑΕ brothers chant the racist chant that they're currently and justly being taken down for way back in 1980. I wonder if the sexist chants from ΔΤΔ are still happening.
Incidentally, I also remember the graffiti from both these gangs. It was pretty prevalent. Yep. ΣΑΕ ... ΔΤΔ ... crips ... bloods ... ISIS ...
A whole bunch of young people need their role models to not subvert the constitution of their country. They need them to not write silly and despicable letters to leaders of foreign nations. They need leaders who can figure out how to fly solar airplanes economically and who have the moral fortitude to reject offers of political gain that are based on killing innocent people.
Okay, rant over for now.
Yesterday Georgia became the first southern state to ban the box.
This policy, signed into law by Governor Nathan Deal through an executive order, postpones questions about a job applicant’s criminal history until it is demonstrated that he or she is one of the most qualified candidates. The policy also requires that the applicant have the opportunity to explain his or her criminal history before denial, and that only a relevant conviction will be used as the basis for disqualification. - See more at: http://www.gjp.org/...
I am so proud of the people at North Decatur Presbyterian Church who worked so hard to make this happen. I know lots of people think Christians are assholes but I'm here to tell you that there are plenty of good church people around.
I grew up in North Decatur Presbyterian Church and I have no doubt that the spiritual nurturing I received there has played a significant role in my activism for civil rights and economic justice.
We humans are social animals and we ALL gravitate towards labels that identify our core values. Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist are all big labels that can serve good or evil, can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on the motivations of the individual adherents.
Today I am celebrating the good work of some loving Christians in Georgia. Thank, Kos, for giving me a forum to do so.
Teach your sons not to rape women. Raping women is wrong. Period. Do not rape anybody under any circumstances.
If you rape somebody, you have done something horrible and society needs you removed from interacting with it because you are a major threat. No matter how great your athletic or performance or managerial or whatever skills you get praised for, raping people is wrong, unacceptable and will not be tolerated in any society that's even close to living up to its humanity.
Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey were convicted on all charges associated with a rape they committed at Vanderbilt University in the summer of 2013. Justice has been served so far. We'll see what the sentencing looks like in March. Two other players will be tried later.
This is the article that spawned this diary. I don't know how to embed it, so this is just the link. It's from the local Tennessee Newspaper that has a ton of articles about the case that show up on Google search.
The headline is 'Vanderbilt players express support for ex-teammates, victim' I'm all for support and I'm also for removing rapists from interaction in society for a very long time.
Don't rape anybody ever. Raping people is wrong. Don't ever, ever rape anyone. Got that?
