This report on tells it all :

Governor Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal sat on the front row of a Republican Candidate meet and greet and watched as Dawson County Deputy Tony Wooten removed video journalist Nydia Tisdale from Burt’s Pumpkin Farm.
Here's how it started, with Clint Bearden introducing Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens who proceeded to give his stump speech ...
When talking about Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate Michelle Nunn, referring to the Chamber of Commerce debate between Perdue and Nunn, Hudgens said listening to Nunn
“I thought I was going to absolutely puke.”
Hudgens looked at Tisdale and said
“I don’t know why you’re video taping?”

This comment from Hudgens noticeably changed the mood in the room about Tisdale recording the event, especially for Bearden. Hudgens introduced Richard Woods. While Woods was speaking Bearden went and sat next to Tisdale, and according to Tisdale he asked her to stop videoing or she would have to leave. Tisdale told him that she was invited and would not stop.

On Saturday, I had the chance to meet Branko Radulovacki (a.k.a. "Dr. Rad") who is running for the Democratic nomination for the US Senate race in 2014, to replace retiring Senator Saxby Chambliss.

It was a rather low-key "meet & greet" event sponsored by the Pickens County Tea Party (!), and all candidates for public office of either party were invited to host a table there. No rallies or speeches or program, just a get to know the candidates kind of affair. I met some candidates for local & state offices, which was interesting, all cordial & whatnot.

Dr. Rad was engaging & a pleasure to meet, looked me in the eye & listened to what I had to say. His campaign website clearly states his positions on most of the important issues, and from what I can tell it is well reasoned & sensible, which is rather refreshing for Georgia at least.

He is challenging Michelle Nunn for the nomination. Michelle Nunn is the daughter of former Senator Sam Nunn, and has already attracted backing from some heavyweights within the Democratic Party. Notably, however, her campaign website has so far no statement about the substantive issues, just a bio & link for contributions.

Is Dr. Rad a better option for Democrats in Georgia than Michelle Nunn? A good question - all I can say at this point is that I give Dr Rad (and myself!!) some credit for having the courage to show up at a Tea Party sponsored event (!), and that I'm encouraged that the Democratic Party is showing some signs of life in Georgia - Kind of like Mark Twain said: "the rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated".

This one has been on my mind for a while, so I guess the time is now to share some things I have come across relating to the origins of the Mormon experience.

I don't often write diaries, but some comments on a diary I just posted yesterday :
Idaho Senator Crapo arrested on DUI (23 Dec 2012)
... reminded me about this. Crapo is a supposedly teetotaling Mormon, so particularly ironic to get busted for a DUI. Which got me thinking on how some folks say Joseph Smith got started in the first place, which is at such odds with what it seems to have become since then.

In short, it appears that Joseph Smith, who was essentially the prophet of Mormonism, may have used entheogens as a key ingredient for his spiritual quest & ministry.

There is a pretty in depth description in :
The Restoration, Holy Ghost and Visions: Did Joseph Smith use psychedelics to facilitate visionary experiences? Excerpts from Dr. Robert Becksteadm's essay "The Restoration and The Sacred Mushrooom"

For example here's an excerpt:

Heavenly manifestations occurred in a March 18th 1833 sacrament meeting held in Kirtland Ohio under the direction of Joseph Smith.

Bro Joseph … promise[d] that the pure in heart that were present should see a heavenly vision … after which the bread and wine was distributed by Bro Joseph after which many of the brethren saw a heavenly vision of the savior and concourses of angels, and many other things, of which each one has a record of what he saw. (LDS History of the Church, Vol I. p. 283., Kirtland High Council Minutes (December 1832–November 1837). P. 16-17)

In the afternoon of March 27th 1833, Ebenezer Robinson reported that after the administration of the bread and wine Frederick G. Williams bore record that a holy angel of God came and sat between him and Joseph Smith, Senior.

Here is another interesting piece on this:
Was Joseph Smith the First Hippy?

Finally the insight I liked the best was the interview with Dr. Robert Beckstead and James Warren Mooney – “The Mormons: Joseph Smith’s Psychedelic Voyage”

it's a bit long 2+ hours, but if you have the time it's worth it. Very insightful.

What's it all mean? I am not a Mormon so I can't judge, but just find it all intriguing - actually mind-blowing. I'm amazed that this is not front-page news on the cover of Time Magazine or something.

I'd hope that the Mormon church owns up to it's roots & acknowledge that they are the heirs to an incredible legacy. Perhaps if they turned back to the real plant teachers they would have less of a problem with embarrassing things like their standard-bearers getting arrested on DUI's

Either way, I wish all my fellow beloved Kossacks a Merry Christmas (or alternative celebration of your choice!) & best wishes for a happy New Baktun

Another Republican arrested on DUI -
Police: US Sen. Crapo arrested, charged with DUI

Idaho U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence in a Washington, D.C., suburb, authorities said.

Police in Alexandria, Va., said Sunday that the Idaho Republican was pulled over after his vehicle ran a red light. Police spokesman Jody Donaldson said Crapo failed field sobriety tests and was arrested at about 12:45 a.m. without incident. He was transported to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond at about 5 a.m..

by orange dog

My Congress person Tom Graves from NW Ga, called my phone for a live Town Hall, so i listened in , got in the question queue, but never got to ask it. (my question was going to be : do you support legislation to repeal Citizens United which gives foreign corporations the same rights as American citizens - no wonder I did not get called on)

Read below for random comments & log of what was said.

I realized after that I had not published until it was over, so not really a "live" blog any more.

Dear Osama: You were no Al Gore

by orange dog

If Osama bin Laden had really cared about Climate Change, then what the heck was he doing planning attacks on public transportation infrastructure? Didn't he realize that is a contradiction? Public Transportation is part of the SOLUTION, so if you recognize the PROBLEM, why would you attack something that is part of the SOLUTION. Good grief, or maybe not so good - ok then just grief!
