Heroes and Angels in Kosland.

by racheltracks

Somehow, the words "Thank you" don't even begin to express the gratitude that I feel for this community. Most of you don't have a clue who I am. Many of you know my mom, Racheltracks. Until she became very sick two years ago she spent almost every waking moment of her existence on Daily Kos. She has always spoken so highly of everyone she has met here. She speaks often of the incredible things that this community does to help those less fortunate.

When we were desperately in need of help so we could fix our broken down car, keep our electricity on and feed my 9 year old nephew, this community blessed us with an abundace of love and financial assistance like I had never seen before - anywhere. You literally saved us. There is no amount of gratitude that could ever be enough for all that you did for us, more than once. When my mom was on life support two years ago Nurse Kelly, Sara R and many others spread the word throughout this community. The magnitude of love that I felt for my mom and our family was the most incredible experience of my life. Too many prayers and well wishes to even begin to count. For all the remaining days of my life I will believe that your prayers, well wishes, blessings and thoughts are what saved my mom's life. Most people don't survive flash pulmonary edema. I could never thank you enough for saving her life. The beautiful quilt that Sara R and Ann made for my mom blanketed her with love during her very long recovery.

That brings me to today. Really the last week or so. Nineteen days ago I met a woman in my German Shepherd Owners group on Facebook. She was in the blackest hole of her life. She was broke and broken down, disabled and desperate and on the verge of being evicted with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. I had never had any contact with her before. Within four minutes of posting about my dogs loving me even though I am disabled while all my friends have walked out of my life, Nicole messaged me begging for help. Something in my heart told me that I had to help her. One to two minutes after her message I received a message from another woman unknown to me sending me love and prayers. Her name is Penny. I told her about the situation and she felt that she also had been called to help this woman. We asked for help on every Facebook page we could think of. We were getting nowhere.

That is where the heroes and angels of Daily Kos come into play. Although only a hand full of people know who I am, I decided to give it a shot. This is the worst time of year to be asking people for help. Especially strangers. Through prayers, recs, re-posts and donations this community saved Nicole and her service dogs. This community raised $1200.00. We had really needed a good deal more than that however we were able to figure out how to cut some corners and make it work. Nicole wants to go home to Tennessee. Penny agreed to use her vacation days and drive Nicole to Tennessee. She lives near Spencer, Iowa. Nicole is in Huron, SD.  Penny is leaving late tonight headed for Nicole's apartment. They will load up and head out for Lebanon, TN as soon as they are loaded. Thanks to this amazing community, Nicole will be home sometime tomorrow afternoon. Penny will get Nicole situated and then she is coming to Georgia to meet me! Out of this desperate situation, a beautiful friendship unlike any I have ever had before has been born! We have formed a strong bond over the last 19 or so days. Penny has a heart just like the heroes and angels that reside in Kosland. I have invited her to become a part of this loving community. I know she will love it here.

"Thank you" feels so inadequate, but I just don't know what else to say. Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this incredible group.

As soon as Nicole is settled, I will post pics and update you in regards to the miracle you gave us.

Thank you all so very much.

Really Really the last time!

by racheltracks

I will do anything to make this up to you guys. I know I have become very annoying and I am so sorry. I just don't know where else to turn. This is a terrible time of year for everyone, including all of the agencies that do help people financially. I give you my word I will not post another diary about this issue except the one to update you all when we get Nicole home. If we could scrounge up 400 people that could each donate $1 then we would be where we need to be. We have cut out as much expense as we can. We are cutting every corner we can find.

The name of the woman that is going to transport Nicole is Penny. She is a 60 year old truck driver with a heart of gold. She is truly a blessing. She was the only other person that stepped up to the plate to help me make this happen. Until you guys came along, of course! She and I are willing to pay anyone back that needs us too. It would be monthly payments but we will do it. We are just so close and I don't want to give up. I have never been a quitter. If we could keep her there until my SSI check comes in on the 18th then I would be happy to throw the rest in. If anyone can help but needs their money back just message me and we can work it out. Thank you all so much for everything you have all done so far. We are $400 short. I will keep you updated so that we take nothing more than just what we need. Please forgive me for being so tenacious!

I can't even begin to express our gratitude at the love you guys have shown our cause. The transporter and I have given all we have to give money wise. The transporter is eating the cost to drive to Huron from her home near Spencer, Iowa.

You guys have managed to raise almost $1000! Our Facebook group finally let us post the gofundme story and they raised $200. It will be tight but another $400 to $500 should do it. Thank you all so much for the love you have given to our cause!

I am so sorry to keep posting this. We have tried every agency in South Dakota that we can get a hold of. Even Salvation Army. Every agency that we have reached is telling us that the money they had allotted for the year is gone. Call back after the first of the year is all we are hearing. I have tried every rental agency I can find on Google and no one rents cargo vans for anything other than local use. We spoke with the attorney this morning and he managed to convince the landlord to give us until Friday at 5pm to have Nicole out of there. We are up to $527 in donations on paypal and $140 on Gofundme. I did manage to find a cheaper truck at Budget for about $850.00. We still need $300-400 for fuel and a few dollars to feed the woman that is taking her own vacation time to transport Nicole. Penny is a truck driver for a living. She is asking for nothing but transportation home and a meal or two on the way there. I am not sure how long the journey is. They may need to stay in a very cheap motel halfway through the trip so as not to over stress Nicole's body or the dog.

We are beyond grateful for every donation, rec, prayer, well wish and re-post. This is the most amazing community I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. Filled with love and kindness, even for a perfect stranger. We can't thank you enough. We feel terrible continuing to ask for help however we just can't get her moved without the total amount needed. Thank you to everyone that has contributed. I know this is crazy but even if 500 people could each contribute $1 that would put us a lot closer to our goal!

We have been blessed by two people offering frequent flier miles which has cut our amount needed down by $350-400. We are very grateful for that also. It is a huge help.

Below is the post from yesterday. This is Nicole's story.

My daughter needs our help. She has a disabled friend that will become homeless on Tuesday along with one current and one retired service dog. This is her story.

Nicole suffers from many disabilities. She has been diabetic since the age of four. The diabetes has affected her vision to the point of no longer being able to drive. She was in a near fatal car accident several years ago which caused extensive damage physically. The worst thing by far was the traumatic brain injury. She was in a coma for just over one month. The brain injury has in some ways affected her judgement. She is far too trusting for one thing.

About a year ago, Nicole's aunt convinced her to move from Tennessee to South Dakota so that she and her daughter could help care for her. It turns out the only thing they wanted to help with was spending her SSI check. That has left her with no money and just a few short days before the Sheriff puts her belongings on the street. She has a five year old service dog and a fifteen year old retired service dog that she has had since eight weeks of age. She has somewhere to go in Tennessee if we can get her there and my daughter has found someone that will transport her from Huron, SD to Lebanon, TN if we can raise the funds for a Uhaul and a bus ticket to get the transporter back home.

We are down to the wire. Now we are desperate for financial assistance. My daughter been working with the landlords and they have given her time above and beyond what the court ruled. If anyone can even spare $1, it will get us closer to getting her home.

Thank you for any assistance.

Update: http://gofundme.com/.... is Nicole's gofundme account. That is a zero after the g in case you have to go to it manually. We have been having trouble with the page.

My daughter is even willing to pay back whatever funds she can. She is also disabled so it would not be quick but she is willing to do whatever is needed.

Last time. We are within reach of our goal. Wee think we can pull this off with another $400 to $500. You guys are amazing. Thank you all so much! We raised $393.00 last nit. We still need $2200.00. The u-haul alone is $1400 plus taxes from Huron, SD to Lebanon, TN.  The woman that is going to transport is actually taking her own vacation days to transport her so I would like to fly her home if at all possible instead of putting her on a bus. It could save her 1-2 days in which case she could get back to work quicker and use less vacation days. Thank you all again so very much!

I never think of my mother on Mother's Day.  I only think of myself and my four children.  I think of my mother the day after Mother's Day with only sadness and regret and disappointment.  I refuse to ruin Mother's Day with thoughts of the woman who raised me, and did a pretty poor job of it at that.  I'm sure I need to forgive her for the things she did to me and maybe one day I will.  Today, though, is not that day.  Today I think back in sadness and anger.

Atlanta Area Meet-Up

by racheltracks

This will probably be the shortest recorded diary on Daily Kos, as I don't have much to add after the title.  I am looking forward to having an Atlanta or near there, depending on where people are coming from, meet-up.

So far, we have three for sure's and one maybe to attend.  One Pissed Off Liberal, Annrose and I will be there and maybe eeff, though she has a four and a half hour drive.  Opol suggested we might meet at Manuel's in Atlanta, which is the almost official Democratic hangout around here.  We're open to suggestions, though, so please sign up and tell us your preference for where we meet.  You can also sign up in Navajo's "New Day" diary, posted each day at ten-thirty eastern daylight time.

Opol and I look forward to the meet-up and being with each one there.  Thanks for considering and responding.  rachel

PS:  You don't have to be a Georgia Kossack to attend.  We welcome anyone from anywhere.

Many of you know Nurse Kelley wrote a vigil diary for me when I had knee replacement surgery twice and coded and died and was on life support for three days last January.  I believe the messages, the prayers, the lit candles and meditations were a tremendous life force for me and helped me heal.  A community of love can do great wonders.

Well, I was in end stage renal failure Monday and Sara r wrote another beautiful vigil diary for me and once again, I have been made, if not whole, much better.  I always reach out to Sara r when I am in distress. She is like a sister and a mother healer, along with her sister, Ann.

I  had blood tests last Friday and the results came back Monday and I was told to go the the ER immediately.  They took me in right away and before IV's or anything, they were giving me a drug to counteract the tremendously high potssium level I had as they were afraid it was going to give me a heart attack.  They also shot insulin into me and then sugar to counteract the insulin, as potassium will also bind with insulin and leave the body.  I was only in the hospital for two days, and now will need a delicate balancing act between my congestive heart failure and my kidney disease.  I will have to carefully measure my fluid intake and balance out my diet so one illness doesn't overtake the other.  I was in serious shape Monday and when I read Sara r's vigil diary for me, I knew why I got better so fast.  I'm not discounting doctors and medicine, but I believe a loving community can heal the sick.

I don't yet have the energy to thank everyone, and I'd like to give a shout out to a few of you and all of you know I loved your messages and prayers.  First off, to Joe Democrat - you are new to me and I love your handle.  To my sister Vetwife, you are so strong and stalwart and always there when I need something.  Thank you.  Whenwego is also new to my life and has been very caring and considerate of me.  Kitsap River spent time on the phone talking with me about dialysis options, which I don't need right now, but if we don't get this delicate balance right, I will and I know she will be there to help me.  I feel one with her.  Flumptytail, you hussy, so glad to see your well wishes.  They mean an awful lot to me.  Llbear - thanks for the beautiful prayer, it was both healing and soothing.  Iamgumby and asym are two who sent money and they will be getting a private kosmail.  Peregrine Kate - you have such burdens yourself and you are always there to lighten others.  Bless you.  Otteray Scribe.  Thanks for my quilt message and forgive me for stupidly not realizing that even though I lost your e-mail address I can write you kos mail.  And last, but by no means least, ridemybike, my dear one that appears periodically in my life and brings me joy.  Thanks to all of you who commented.  May you be blessed a thousand fold and know that I hold all of you in my heart.  Thanks for reading.  rachel

We all know that famous phrase - I came for the politics and stayed for the community.
And that describes exactly how I feel about Daily Kos.  I stumbled on it from Talking Points Memo two and a half years ago when I was politically naive and passionate about learning.  I was originally very impressed with the quality of the diaries and the infomation therein and every day when I logged on felt like a kid in a candy store with all this knowledge.

And caring.  This was in the time of exmearden and her devestating cancer.  And her most touching diaries - brilliantly written and brutally honest.  We became facebook friends and I eagerly awaited any news of or from her.  I was here at the end of her life, as well, and suffered many tears over her death.

I was also following Kitsap River's kidney woes.  We became friends as well and still talk on the phone.  As much as I cried over exmearden, I rejoiced when Kitsap got her new kidney and it began functioning.  Some of the most beautiful diaries I have read were written by Kitsap, re her suffering and her joy.

I was here when there was a fund-raiser for Sara r to get a gall bladder operation.  If I remember correctly, we all donated to the tune of around eighteen thousand for her hospital bill, without which Sara would not have had surgery.  I was stunned that a group of strangers would donate that much money so someone could get an operation.  That was before I knew how important Sara was to this community.

As some of you know, on the 19th of December, I had total knee replacement surgery.  Ten days later, my knee and leg were swollen and inflamed, and, due to the fact my aortic valve has a leak in it, the doctor decided to re-do the surgery as he felt it was infected.   Ten days after that I went back to the hospital in the evening, as my whole leg was swollen like an elephant's and red as fire.  Luckily for me, I was admitted for observation around ten o'clock that night.  At five-thirty the next morning I coded and died and was on life support for three days in the ICU.  Weirdly enough, it was the easiest thing I have ever done.  Thankfully, a nurses aide was in my room when I took a breath and went to take a second one and couldn't breathe.  I mumbled to her I couldn't breathe, then I heard, "She's coding!" and that's all I knew for four days.
