North Carolina Open Thread

by randallt

Welcome to North Carolina Open Thread For Sunday, May 31st. This is a new weekly feature of North Carolina Blue. We hope this regular platform will give readers interested in North Carolina politics a place to share their knowledge, insight, inspiration and connections as we work on taking back our state from the extreme, money blinded powers that pull the levers here.

Please join us below and every week as we try to Connect, Unite and Act with our community of North Carolina Daily Kos members. Listed below are NC issue diaries from the previous week and they include DocDawg's invitation to come to Winston Salem on July 13th, a few looks at Governor McCrory's veto of a same sex discrimination bill, and Lamont Cranston's article on drastic program cuts to the North Carolina University system.

This is the first Daily Kos weekly open thread for a state. For those in other states, please join us as we strive to establish state open threads in all fifty. Please drop me a line if you are interested in hosting an open thread in your state.

Good day and welcome to DKos Asheville. This is the weekly DKos Asheville open thread for Saturday, May 30th. We try to get together every weekend to share with everyone what we're all up to in Western North Carolina and beyond. We hope this group and others serve to invigorate us locally and regionally here on Daily Kos, building on the sense of community that's grown through our online engagement. DKos Asheville and other local and state groups can give us all a better sense of connection, a better understanding of who we stand with, work with, and share with. We hope this local and wider community can help leverage our orange passion for progressive politics to elect more and better Democrats.
Tip of the week: Don't be afraid of strangers
1- Always remain cool and conversational, never confrontational.
2- Choose your subject carefully. You'll find the more you do it, the more confidence you get which allows you to expand your choice of people you might strike up a conversation with.
3- Start with the weather or "They could really use another checker" or whatever the two or more of you will have in common.
4- Then ask them what they think of Bernie Sanders.
5- See what happens
5- Feel good, make a difference.
Please follow us below the fold. This week's edition is another opportunity to talk about local and NC politics and discuss what we can do to support each other and build networks. This week's focus is on the mechanics of precinct leadership which I'm finding more and more to be the most important elected office in America.

3- Ask how you can help.
4- Follow up with what you can and want to do.

At this website, Buncombe County provides easy one stop shopping to get information about your precinct and district. I'm sure all counties have something similar that provides potential activists a great starting point from which to make connections and get involved. The first screen lists all precincts and when you click on one it shows you the map on the screen below. It's pretty slick, give it try.

DKos Asheville: Celtic Lassie's Quilt

by randallt

DKos Ashevillians traveled to Tennesee Wednesday to present Sara and Ann's amazing community quilt to Celtic Lassie with Otteray Scribe. A worthy dose of love from Kossacks. Gordon20024 drove down from Roanoke to meet us for the presentation and Joy of Fishes flew in on Tuesday and is there now. She is being the most loving mother hen in the whole world. When she tells you to "shoo" with that wonderful little smile and the twinkle in her eye, you know she means it. I'm sure all of us being there for OS meant the world to him. That's what families are for right? Additional help around the house would always be appreciated if anyone is able to help. Just let me know.

After we drove back to Asheville, we met up with DawnN and SteelerGrrl and Guy and had a nice meal at Rosetta's kitchen, Asheville's premier hippy vegetarian food and love cafe. I am hoping that some of us can get together again today. SteelerGrrl is attending a conference in Asheville this week so I was able to pick up a pair of tie dye sox from her for Celtic Lassie on the way to Tennessee Wednesday.

Please join us below the fold for a few photos. Thanks for being part of this community and please keep Chuck and Brandi and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

DKos Asheville: Roanoke Review

by randallt

Greetings from Asheville!

DKos Asheville 4/28/15

DKos Asheville brought its eighth community meet up to life this past weekend with a historic appearance of a civil rights icon, Dr Fergie Reid, in Roanoke Virginia.
As reported by Roanoke's NBC Station, WSLS10:

A living legend was honored in Roanoke on Saturday. A special event was held at Hotel Roanoke recognizing William Ferguson Reid. Dr. Reid was the first African-American elected to the Virginia General Assembly in the twentieth century.

In March of this year, Reid celebrated his 90th birthday. In an effort to continue his long history of expanding voters' rights, people are taking part in a campaign called "90 for 90." The goal is to register new voters for the election. People across the state are working to register 90 new voters in each of Virginia's precincts.
